Look, I’m not going to pretend I’ve got this all figured out. Half the time I’m exercising in an old t-shirt that’s seen better days. But I have learned a few things about buying women’s workout clothes that actually make a difference, so here we are. Read my guide to sorting out your workout clothes below.

You probably have one too. That drawer where workout gear goes to die. There’s stuff in there you wore once, stuff that looked great in the changing room but feels weird when you’re actually moving, and at least three things you bought on a whim that never quite worked out. No judgment, we’ve all been there.

The annoying thing is, it’s not even about having too much or too little. It’s more that most of it just doesn’t get used. And then you’re stood there on a Tuesday evening wanting to go for a walk, but everything either doesn’t fit right or is in the wash, and suddenly staying on the sofa seems much more appealing.

Buying for Fantasy You vs Actual You

This is where I keep going wrong. I’ll see something and think “yes, perfect for those 6am runs I’m definitely going to start doing.” Spoiler: I do not do 6am runs. I do not like mornings. Why do I keep buying clothes for morning exercise?

What I actually do is squeeze in walks whenever I can, maybe some yoga if my back’s playing up, occasionally a workout video in the spare room. That’s it. That’s my fitness routine. And honestly? That’s fine. But my clothes should probably reflect that reality instead of some version of me that doesn’t exist.

So if you’re mostly stretching at home, you don’t need hardcore gym gear. If you’re walking loads, comfort for hours matters more than looking coordinated. If you do quick workouts between other things, you need stuff that’s easy to chuck on without thinking about it. Think a crisp, block colour tee, or even a personalised hoodie that you actually love. These pieces go a long way to getting your wardrobe where you really want it.

What Actually Matters

Right, the practical bit. You need leggings or joggers that don’t fall down or dig in. That’s genuinely the main thing. High waisted ones tend to stay put better, but whatever works for you. Black or dark colours make sense because they go with everything and don’t show every mark, but if you hate wearing black, don’t force it.

Tops are pretty straightforward – just needs to be something breathable that you don’t mind sweating in. I’ve got a couple of cheap ones from the supermarket that have lasted longer than expensive ones from fancy shops, so don’t overthink this bit.

Sports bras are weirdly personal. What’s comfortable for someone else might be awful for you. If you’re just walking or doing gentle stuff like yoga, you don’t need serious support. If you’re doing anything bouncy, you definitely do. Having a couple of different ones helps because some days you want more coverage, some days less.

That’s honestly the basics sorted. Everything else is optional.

The Stuff Nobody Mentions

Comfort is so obvious it feels stupid saying it, but seriously, if something’s uncomfortable, you just won’t wear it. Doesn’t matter if it was expensive or looks nice or everyone says it’s great. If the waistband digs in or the fabric’s scratchy or it rides up, it’s useless.

I’ve wasted money on so many things that were “fine” in the shop but annoying in real life. Now I’m much more ruthless. If I’m thinking about the clothes while I’m trying to exercise, they’re not working.

Also, and this matters more than you’d think – can you wear it to do other stuff too? Because if your workout leggings also work for popping to the shops or lounging around, you’ll actually wear them. Clothes that only work for exercise just don’t get used as much, at least not by me.

You Don’t Need Much

Honestly, a few good pieces beat loads of mediocre ones. Two pairs of leggings you actually like, a few tops, a hoodie for when it’s cold. That covers most situations. You can always add more later if you want, but starting small makes sense.

I used to think I needed variety to stop things getting boring, but actually I just wear the same few things on rotation because they work and I don’t have to think about it. Turns out that’s much easier than having loads of choices.

Colours and Patterns

Some people love bright colours and patterns. Some people only wear black. I tend to stick to darker colours because they’re easier, but I’ve got one purple top I really like and I wear it loads. Just get what you actually want to wear, not what you think you should want.

There’s no rule that says workout clothes have to look a certain way. If you like it and it’s comfortable, that’s all that matters.

When Things Get Worn Out

This feels obvious but I’ll say it anyway – when something’s lost its shape or the elastic is gone or it’s just looking tired, replace it. Or at least stop wearing it for actual exercise. Worn out clothes make everything feel harder than it needs to be.

I kept wearing the same old sports bra for ages because “it’s fine, it still works” and then I finally replaced it and realized how much better a new one feels. Sometimes we just get used to things being a bit rubbish.

Bringing It All Together

So, the bottom line is, get a few things that fit properly and feel comfortable. Wear them for whatever exercise you actually do, not what you imagine doing. Replace things when they stop working, and don’t overthink it.

The clothes aren’t the important bit anyway. They’re just meant to make moving around a bit easier and more comfortable. If they’re doing that, you’re sorted. If they’re not, change them.

Start with one or two decent pieces and see how it goes. You can always get more later, but honestly you probably won’t need much. Most of us wear the same few things anyway, might as well make sure those are quality pieces that actually work for you and your lifestyle.
