That’s why, as a business owner, you have a responsibility to create a comfortable workplace environment. It’s not about making your workplace a free-for-all, but facilitating downtime and creating a good atmosphere will benefit your employees and actually result in increased productivity

Physical comfort is the first, arguably most important thing to handle. For desk-based jobs, workplace office furniture is an essential facet.

You need to invest in comfortable office seating, generally in the form of ergonomic desk chairs. Without the right seating for actual working hours, you risk your staff’s lumbar comfort, which eventually results in increased fatigue and lower productivity. People spend the majority of their day at their desks, so make it comfortable. 

Another great addition to working furniture is standing desks or height adjusters, which allow staff to work in the position that makes them most comfortable. 

Comfortable break room furniture

Beyond work furniture, offices (and other workplaces) should invest in good, comfortable office seating, sofas and tables to make lunches and coffee breaks more enjoyable. People shouldn’t have to sit at their desk all day, every day, even when it comes to meal times. Your staff values their breaks, so show them that you do too. 

If you have the space, you should also install some outdoor furniture, as a bit of fresh air and sunshine go a long way when you’re cooped up working all day!

Break room amenities 

Beyond the furniture that your staff relaxes on, think about what you offer to support their time between tasks. Amenities make a huge difference, making staff feel more cared for in their environment, making break rooms and offices less empty and utilitarian. Some great amenities to equip your office with include: 

  • Kettles, tea bags, milk, sugar, etc. 
  • Fridges
  • Coffee machines, with coffee beans and other  
  • Toasters and microwaves
  • Regularly refilled fruit bowls
  • Vending machines for soft drinks and snacks

Ideally, your office will also have its own cafe or restaurant with subsidised food and drink, but if not, you should make sure breaks provide enough time for staff to go to nearby options. 

Setting temperatures properly

Temperature can be a point of contention in any shared space. Workplace regulations require specific temperatures at a bare minimum, but people can still have preferences within these ranges. Make temperature setting a democratic process, ensuring every staff member feels listened to and valued in discussions.

Regardless of any physical alterations you make to your workplace, the overarching comfort will generally come from the atmosphere that you foster in the setting. You must practice essential workplace etiquette and show capacities for processes like: 

  • Employee appreciation
  • Openness and encouragement for one-to-one meetings
  • Hearing staff suggestions properly
  • Providing sufficient HR and safeguarding
  • Making progression pathways clear
  • Making workplace education accessible

All the furniture in the world won’t save a toxic workplace environment. That’s why you need to take stock of the behavioural factors that impact your business and adjust them accordingly. With the right balance of physical and emotional consideration, you can foster a comfortable workplace that people truly look forward to coming into.
