How to Make Your Home Feel Cosy

A cosy home is something most of us would like to achieve whether we have a modern minimalist home or a Scandi style family home or any other style. There are lots of ways to make your home feel cosier and more homely in a stylish way — let’s have a look at some of them.

How to Make Your Home Feel Cosy
  • Soft Materials

Soft materials like luxurious rugs, curtains, beautiful throw pillows and soft blankets quickly add cosiness to a home. So does large soft furniture like sofas, pouffes and beds. Another benefit of having lots of soft materials in your home is that sound levels will be more comfortable which will help you feel more relaxed.

  • Lighting to Fit the Mood

For a home to feel cosy, the lighting has to be right and fit the mood that you’re trying to achieve. Warm, soft and diffused lighting is the best for this. Keep lights warm or dimmed and have several light sources for each room. Candles are also a light source that instantly adds cosiness.

  • The Right Colours

There are lots of colours that can help make your home feel more cosy, whether you prefer something darker or something fresher. You can go for deep, dark colours like a dark green or blue for a bold statement or a colour that adds instant warmth like tangerine or a rich red. For bold colours, you can do a feature wall if you feel like the whole room might be a bit too much. LICK paints are great quality but wallpaper would be a good option too.

  • Homely Scents

What a home smells like is so important to the overall feel too. That’s why real estate agents like to bake a batch of cookies before showing homes to potential buyers. Freshly baked goods smell amazing but there are other scents that add cosiness too. For some, it might be the scent of a freshly cleaned home (natural cleaning products are great for this!) or the smell of freshly washed linen. Others might prefer a floral scent. Scented candles, luxury wax melts, or room diffusers can be used to add a lovely scent to your home — just make sure the scent is mellow and not overpowering.

  • Plants

Add potted plants around your home to add a splash of colour and make your home more homely. Choose gorgeous pots to display your plants in too. If you don’t have green fingers, there are plenty of houseplants that are both beautiful and easy to care for.

  • Music

You can also use music to help make your home feel cosier. Put on some background music to create some ambiance. It needs to be a genre that you enjoy of course. Jazz or classical music can work well for example. Have small speakers placed around your home and make sure the volume level is pleasant — you should be able to have a conversation without the music disturbing you.

  • Personal Details

Last but not least, personal details are so important when you’re trying to make your home feel cosy. Things like your own personal photographs on the wall or in frames elsewhere, your bakset of knitting or the book you’re reading left out on the coffee table — those kinds of items make a home feel lived in and cosy. A home that’s too tidy with everything hidden away often doesn’t feel very homely or cosy so keep a few things out even if you’re very organised and tidy.
