Simple Ways to Give Tired Furniture a Fresh New Look

Simple Ways to Give Tired Furniture a Fresh New Look
Furniture can start to look tired long before it reaches the end of its useful life. A chair may have faded fabric, a chest of drawers might feel dated, or a footstool may no longer suit the colours in the room. None of these issues necessarily mean a replacement is needed.
Refreshing furniture can be an affordable way to update a home while keeping pieces that still work well. From new fabric to a simple change of position, relatively small updates can make a noticeable difference.
Reupholster Rather Than Replace
Reupholstering can give suitable furniture a completely different character. Dining chairs with padded seats, footstools, benches and some armchairs may all be candidates, depending on their construction and condition.
Fabric choice has a major effect on the finished appearance. When looking at upholstery fabrics, consider colour and pattern alongside texture and how the furniture will be used. A chair used every day in a busy family home will have different requirements from an occasional bedroom chair.
It is also worth being realistic about the work involved. Re-covering a straightforward removable seat pad can be manageable for someone comfortable with basic DIY. A large sofa or a chair with complicated shaping may be better handled by an experienced upholsterer. The condition of the frame, springs and padding should also be considered before work begins.

Experiment With Colour and Texture
A furniture refresh offers an opportunity to introduce colours that suit the rest of the room. This does not have to mean choosing the brightest shade available.
An accent chair can work well in a richer colour or an eye-catching pattern, particularly when the surrounding décor is fairly understated. On the other hand, a neutral fabric can give a larger piece greater flexibility if wall colours, rugs or accessories are likely to change over time.
Texture can be equally effective. Soft, tactile materials can make a reading chair feel cosier, while a smoother finish may suit a cleaner, simpler interior. Think about practicality as well as appearance, especially in homes with young children or pets. A beautiful material will soon lose its appeal if it is poorly suited to everyday family life.
Pay Attention to the Smaller Details
Not every furniture update requires a large project. Small details can change how an older piece looks and can often be tackled on a modest budget.
Changing handles on a chest of drawers, cabinet or bedside table is a simple example. New knobs or pulls can shift a piece from dated to contemporary without altering its basic shape. Furniture legs can sometimes be changed too, although replacements need to be compatible and able to support the item safely.
Soft furnishings also help. A different cushion on an armchair or a throw arranged over a sofa can introduce a fresh colour or texture with very little effort. These additions are especially useful for rented homes or households where permanent changes are less practical.

Make Existing Furniture Work With the Room
Sometimes furniture feels wrong because of where it sits rather than how it looks. Before buying something new, try moving existing pieces around.
An occasional chair that feels cramped in the living room might work better in a bedroom. A small side table could become a useful plant stand, while a sturdy bench might find a new purpose in a hallway.
Look at the colours already present in curtains, rugs, cushions, artwork and other accessories. Repeating one or two of these shades on a refreshed furniture piece can help the room feel connected without requiring everything to match.
Moving furniture can also reveal better ways to use the available space. Even shifting a chair closer to a window or changing the position of a side table can alter how comfortable and welcoming a room feels.
Give Good Furniture Another Chance
Older furniture does not always need to be replaced simply because its appearance has lost some appeal. If a piece is sound, useful and suitable for the household, a few carefully chosen changes may give it many more years of use.
New fabric, a different colour, added texture or updated handles can all have an effect. Even rearranging furniture may be enough to make a familiar room feel fresher. Before sending an older piece on its way, consider what could be changed and whether a simple update could help it earn its place in the home again.
