Summer Newborn Essentials

Summer with a newborn can be a struggle, especially when you are both hot and bothered.

Keeping your baby hydrated is essential. If you’re breastfeeding, you don’t need to give your little one extra water, but they may feed more often. Babies who are bottle-fed can have a little cooled boiled water.

Keeping Baby Out of the Sun

Babies under six months shouldn’t be exposed to the sun at all, as their skin contains too little melanin to give any protection.

You must never cover the pram with a muslin, blanket or towel because your baby can overheat.

We recommend the following to keep your little one safe in the sun:

Snoozeshade Original

The SnoozeShade Original is a pram and pushchair shade for babies from birth to six months and attaches in seconds to any pram, pushchair or travel system. It’s safe, made from a breathable mesh fabric that lets air flow freely and safely protects your baby from 99% of UVA and UVB rays (UPF 50+).

Childs Farm Fragrance-Free SPF 50+ Sun Lotion

Sun lotion should be used liberally, carefully and repeatedly on all exposed skin, even on cloudy or overcast days. You should apply to your little one’s skin half an hour before you go outside. Baby sun cream is suitable from 6 months onwards.

Babymoov Anti UV UPF 50+ High Protection Baby Sun Tent

This sun tent is excellent for the beach, park or garden and means your baby can be out with you but protected and not having to stay in their pram.

It has a large front opening and a window with flaps for ventilation. There is also an insect protection net.

Room Temperature

As the warmer weather arrives, we start to worry about the room’s temperature where your baby sleeps. The perfect temperature for a baby’s bedroom is between 16°C (61°F) and 20°C (68°F).

During the day, keep windows and doors open, and blinds and curtains closed. The best way to keep an accurate reading of the temperature is to use a thermometer.

You can cool your baby down, before bed, on hot days by giving them a cool (not cold) bath to settle them.

We recommend the following to keep your little one’s room safe for sleep:

Tommee Tippee GroEgg2

The GroEgg2 gives an accurate reading of the baby’s room temperature and changes colour to indicate if a room is too hot, warm, too cold or just right. It also doubles up as a night light and tells you which tog sleepwear to use with your little one.

Newborn Summer Clothes

If you had your baby in the warmer months, your friends and family have probably bought you lots of lovely summer clothes so this saves money for you and your baby which is an added bonus. However, on hot summer days, all your baby needs is their nappy. So, Even on the hottest nights, a vest or a nappy is just fine.
