Things to Consider When Moving House Around Christmas
In an ideal world, it would be great to be able to plan your house moving date to be at a suitable time for you and your family. Unfortunately, we rarely have any control over what date a house move will take place on. And even when you do get a date to put in your diary, there are often unexpected delays. If your house move is likely to take place around Christmas, there are a few extra things to consider to ensure moving house goes as smoothly as possible. Read on to find out more about this.
Book Your Removal Company Early
During the festive season, some removal companies, and other services, might have reduced business hours so make sure you book early if you are hiring a removal company for your house move. Some might also charge higher fees during the holidays. Also book any appointments you might need with a conveyancer and a solicitor early for the same reason.
This is true for office moving London too, so carefully consider your dates and book your business relocation London removal company in advance to avoid disappointment. For a business, it can make perfect sense to move an office over Christmas while your staff is on annual leave anyway.

Be Prepared for the Season
Moving house in December, means you might have to deal with wintery weather. In the UK, snow isn’t that likely but it does happen! Naturally, unexpected snowfall can cause delays, but ice or heavy rain can too. Getting all your moving boxes, furniture and belongings wet on the way into or out of the moving van is not the best outcome!
If you are expecting problematic weather, prepare as much as you can in advance. You might have to clear your driveway of snow, or salt/sand it if it’s icy, for example. If it will be rainy, have suitable outerwear ready and some large plastic sheets to cover things up when carrying out of your old property and from the van into your new home.
In December, the days are short and dark, so it’s also important to consider the available daylight hours and to make the most of them. Because of the time of the year, it’s also a good idea to ensure that you have set up your utilities for the new home in advance so that your heating, electricity and water will be up and running when you arrive. Just in case, it can be good to have a few torches easily available too.

Pack a Dedicated Christmas Box
If you will be moving into your new home just before Christmas, it’s a great idea to have all your Christmas decorations and other festive essentials packed separately. This means that you’ll be able to decorate your new home straight away and can delay unpacking non-urgent boxes until after the festive season.
It’s also a good idea to have purchased non-perishable Christmas food and drink essentials and have these packed separately too. The same goes for Christmas presents – get them all bought and wrapped before you move and pack them securely in a sturdy box.
Coordinate the Move and Christmas with Your Family
Make sure that any family members that you usually celebrate Christmas with are aware of your situation and let them do whatever they can to help. Perhaps they can host Christmas this year, even if you usually do? Whatever is the norm for you, plan ahead to align any holiday get-togethers with your moving logistics.
