• Frames

Firstly, you need to find the right frames for you. All frames online will have measurements attached to them in the description. Your glasses may have the size on them too. If not, measure them with a tape measure or a ruler to ensure the frames you are looking at are suitable for your face. 

Size dimensions will be three numbers: 53-15-140. The first number is the frame’s eye size (A). The second number is the nasal bridge, commonly known as DBL. The final number is the arm length. These are critical measurements for finding a frame that fits comfortably and securely.

You also need to consider the thickness of your lenses. Some lenses are thick depending on your prescription, and as such, some frames ought not to be able to take the width of the lens. The sizes will note this in the description too.

• Find Your Prescription

When you have eye tests, your optician will record your prescription. You are within your rights to ask for a copy of this prescription, so you know exactly what strength lenses you need. You should enter your prescription precisely as it is on your document. Different numbers and measurements depend on the shape of your eye and the type of lens you need. Double-check when entering your figures, so the lenses are made correctly.

Each element has four parts: sphere, cylinder, axis, add. Not all prescriptions ask for a value in each box. If it’s blank on your prescription, leave it blank when ordering.

Another consideration is your pupillary distance. Your optician will measure in-store when you choose your glasses, but you need this figure when choosing glasses online to make sure the lenses work for you as they should. Measuring your pupillary distance can be tricky, so make sure you know how to do it to get the correct number.

• Choose Any Extras

You can choose to add any extras to your lenses, such as anti-glare coating, scratch-resistant coatings or a blue light filter. These can vary depending on your needs, but most online retailers will offer these as add ons when choosing your prescription frames.
