Adventures with Finn and Skip: Bird
|Adventures with Finn and Skip: Bird | AD
We love the two previous books about Adventures with Finn and Skip published by DK Books – Fish and Forest, so were very excited to see a new book in the series.
The newest addition to this wonderful children’s book series about environmental issues is called Bird and focuses on air pollution.
In Adventures with Finn and Skip: Bird, Finn and Skip go on a hang-gliding adventure high up in the sky. Soon, a flock of swans flies in their path and Finn’s map gets caught on a swan’s beak. Finn needs the map so they decide to follow the birds. The birds take them over a busy city with lots of smog, past industrial areas producing smoke and over a stinky pile of rubbish. They also go past a huge airplane that’s pumping out a trail of fumes… Finn is shocked and wonders what has happened to the city. It didn’t used to be that dirty.
They follow the birds further, out of the city and to the open ocean where they are greeted by a storm. They battle through until they get to a lighthouse for safety. There they meet a bunch of scientists who happened to have found Finn’s map that the bird must have dropped in the storm.
The scientists explain how the air pollution created by humans causes more severe, extreme weather conditions and how this affects humans and animals. Finn asks what we can do to help and the scientists share lots of different ideas for how to reduce pollution with your lifestyle choices.
The book is aimed at ages 3-5 year-olds but I can confirm that older children love this book too. My 6.5-year-old and my 9-year-old love this book series. The text is generally quite simple but the messages about protecting the environment makes more sense to older children due to them having more awareness of climate change and how to be eco-friendly. My youngest, aged nearly 4 years, also enjoys reading this book. The illustrations are adorable too!
I love that this book series provides interesting stories, practical tips and lots of fascinating facts as well as works as a prompt for further discussion about the important topics and environmental issues that the books cover.
