If you’re a foodie, visiting some brilliant restaurants and trying the local food should definitely be on your holiday to do list when travelling to the United Arab Emirates. Below are some traditional drinks and dishes that shouldn’t be missed:
- Shawarma. This is the ideal street food for meat eaters with a choice of sliced chicken, lamb, or beef wrapped in a soft flatbread together with onions, fresh vegetables, and different sauces for an amazing, quick meal on the go. If you’re a vegetarian, look out for restaurants serving falafel instead.
- Luqaimat. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss this popular Emirati dessert. Luqaimat are a kind of sweet dumpling with a soft inside and crunchy outer, made with flour, sugar, yeast, butter, and milk, spiced traditionally with cardamom and saffron. The ingredients are mixed into a smooth batter, then deep fried until golden.
- Arabic Coffee. If you’re a coffee lover like myself don’t miss the powerful Arabic coffee, also known as Gahwa, that you’ll be able to find all over the United Arab Emirates. You’ll be able to smell the amazing fragrance walking around and find plenty of places for a caffeine fix. The traditional Gahwa is spiced with fragrant spices including cumin, cloves, cardamom and saffron and often served with sweet dates on the side.
These are just a few of the many amazing food and drinks that you can find in the UAE. There’s so much to explore and choose from whether you want to experience the traditional foods of the country or eat international cuisines such as Chinese, Moroccan, Lebanese or French for example – the United Arab Emirates have it all and they do it very well.
