5 Essential Home Maintenance Tasks You Shouldn’t Ignore
|5 Essential Home Maintenance Tasks You Shouldn’t Ignore
Owning a property comes with a lot of responsibilities, surprise jobs here and there to fix things, and ongoing tasks to keep your home safe and working well. There’s a long list of things to remember and jobs to do!
In this article, I’ll share a few essential home maintenance tasks you shouldn’t ignore. Ones that if you don’t do, you’re likely to run into bigger (and more expensive) problems sooner or later.
- Protect your boiler
The boiler is an important part of your home. It keeps your house warm during the autumn and winter and, for many, it supplies hot water all year round too. Getting your boiler serviced on a yearly basis is essential to keep it in good working order and it’s also a good idea to have boiler cover. It’s a low monthly cost that will give you peace of mind and protection. If you ever have any boiler problems, you’ll be covered and will save lots of money if you have boiler cover in place. It can be so expensive to fix a broken boiler and, of course, any time without heating or hot water while you wait for repairs will be a big inconvenience. Get a policy that covers the cost of the engineer to come out, the work and any parts needed.
- Look after your other large appliances
It’s also important to look after your other large appliances in the home – your washing machine, your dryer, your dishwasher. They’re really easy to look after and clean if you do it on a regular basis and don’t leave it to become a big job or a big problem. Clean your washing machine and your dishwasher once a month by running the maintenance cycle (sometimes called drum clean on the washing machine) or another very hot programme with a dedicated cleaning product for the the type of machine you have or a natural option like white vinegar. Consider using a company like soluble solutions that really takes eco friendly to the next level with their no waste products. It’s also important to regularly clean your tumble dryer, but this doesn’t have to be done as frequently.
- Keep your drains clear
A clogged shower or bath drain full of hair and grime is never fun and neither is a slow draining sink clogged with soap, fats, and food remains. It can happen quickly and the longer you leave it, the bigger the mess. Look after your drains on a regular basis to keep the water draining well. I like to use a generous amount of bicarbonate soda that I simply pour down the plughole, then I add either white vinegar or lemon juice. This combination creates a fizz that helps clean and clear the drain. Then I use an old bamboo toothbrush to clean the plug and the parts of the drain that I can reach from the plug hole. You can also add a few drops of essential oil for a fresh scent.
- Reseal when needed
Water in places that shouldn’t be wet is always a problem. If you notice that the sink, the bath or the shower needs resealing, don’t put it off. Do it straight away to protect your home against water damage that can soon become a costly job.
- Clean your gutters
It’s not a fun job but cleaning your gutters is an important home maintenance task. The gutters are there to collect rainwater and guide it off the roof and down into the drain to ensure that it drains away from the building and doesn’t damage the structure. It can be costly to deal with clogged gutters so it’s best to maintain them before it’s too late and regularly remove any leaves that could lead to a blockage.
