How to Prepare Your Garden for Spring – Things You Can Do Now
To me, it feels like winter is slowly but surely coming to an end. The days are a bit longer, the sun is warming and I can just tell that spring is around the corner. Our gardens are usually left alone over winter, but now that spring is near, it’s a great idea to start preparing your garden and get it ready for all the beauty the warmer seasons will bring soon.
Here are a few tips of things you can start doing now:
- Tidy up!
The first step to prepare your garden is t go through all areas and flower beds and get rid of any leaves, twigs etc. for a clean garden that is ready for planting seeds. Also look out for any pests and get rid of them now.
- Prepare the soil
Check the quality of your soil and add new soil, compost or manure as needed to make sure it’s healthy and ready for plants and homegrown herbs and vegetables.
- Clean your greenhouse
Make sure your greenhouse is clean by washing it now before you start sowing seeds. Clean the glass on the outside and on the inside and wash all surfaces and the floor too. Clean all your trays and pots and don’t forget to air the greenhouse by letting plenty of fresh air in. Make sure you have all the gardening equipment that you will need to get started soon.
- Compost
If you’re not already composting, create a composting area to put garden waste in to create a rich compost that your flowers and plants will love and thrive from. Use a mix of garden waste including grass clippings, paper and vegetable and fruit peelings and other food waste. Read up on what you can and cannot compost and don’t forget to turn the compost with a large garden fork to help it along.
- Look after your tools
Check your gardening tool supply and make sure they are ready to be used. Clean tools work better and will last longer and therefore save you money. Clean tools also help prevent the spread of bacteria, fungi and diseases. Sharpen any tools that are used for cutting.
- Choose and order seeds
For this task, you don’t even have to be in the garden. Decide what you would like to plant this year and look at what to plant in the next few months ready for bloom in the summer, then go online and order your seeds. Some seeds can be sown now already as they need a longer growing season. Find things to sow in January and February here.
