|Spend More Time in Your Garden to Improve Mental Health
Many of us are on the lookout for ways to improve our mental health and reduce the stress in our lives. There are many different things you can do to improve your mental well-being, but have you tried the method that’s right on your doorstep?
A simple way to improve your mental health and to lower your stress levels is to simply spend more time in your garden so why not give it a go this summer and see how it makes you feel?
Here are a few ideas for how to spend your time in your garden to improve your well-being:
- Gardening
Gardening is a lovely activity that not only gives you beautiful flowers and fresh crops but also lowers stress levels, improves your mood (even so much that it reduces the risk of depression), and improves your self-esteem as you learn new things and see what you can achieve. Gardening also provides physical exercise which is great for your body and your mind. The Vitamin D from the sunshine is also essential for our health and can help us sleep better too.
- Stimulating Your Senses
Being in your garden will stimulate all your senses and offers a great opportunity to practise mindfulness. Take note of everything around you – the beauty of nature, the sounds of birds and bees, the fragrances from the flowers, the textures, the tastes of the foods you’re growing, the feel of the breeze or the sunshine on your skin. Feel yourself calm down as you take in your environment.
- Feeling the Soil & the Grass
Did you know that touching soil with your hands can help keep depression at bay? There are bacteria in the soil that triggers the release of serotonin and dopamine in our bodies and this boosts both mood and immunity.
Walking barefoot on your lawn is another way to look after your health – it helps regulate stress levels and can boost immunity too.
- Spending Time with Loved Ones
The garden is also a lovely space to enjoy with your friends and family. It’s easy to hang out outdoors and the fresh air and beautiful scenery makes it the perfect place to enjoy spending time with your favourite people.
Step outside into your own garden and make the most of it by spending time there by yourself and with your loved ones. You’ll feel happier, less stressed and calmer in no time.
