Tips for How to Decorate Your Baby’s Nursery

Decorating your baby’s nursery is an important milestone for many parents and parents-to-be. Some choose to do this while they are still pregnant, while others wait until the baby is born, or until the baby is ready to start sleeping in their own room. Whichever stage you are in, there are some considerations to keep in mind for this project. If you’re looking for tips for how to decorate your baby’s nursery, read on.

Choose a Colour Scheme

Choosing a colour to work around it is a great way to get started when planning the décor of any room. For a baby’s nursery, it’s a wise idea to go for a neutral and calm colour for the walls. Neutral colours or muted pastels make an ideal base for a room. With a neutral base, you can then add pops of colour and interesting details with other aspects of the room’s décor.

Add Wall Décor

Once you have your colour base for the wall, it’s fun to add some details by adding a border or some children’s wall stickers, like these stunning nursery wall stickers from Rose Rowan Design. Wall stickers are excellent for a child’s bedroom as they are quick to install and easy to change when your child gets older and develops their own favourite themes.

Choose Lighting Wisely

For a baby’s nursery, it’s important to have practical lighting as well as ambient lighting. Add a brighter LED ceiling light that will allow you to see well when doing tasks such as nappy changes. Then add some cosy, smaller lights for the bedtime routine – bright enough to let you see what you’re doing but muted enough to encourage your baby to fall asleep. It’s also a good idea to have some kind of small night light to allow you to easily check on your baby in the night without disturbing or waking them. We used this owl night light for all three of our babies for this purpose. I highly recommend it and it’s still going strong (and being used daily) over a decade later.

Incorporate Storage

While your baby is young, their clothes are small and all they need is nappies, wipes, and a few toys. They grow quickly though and the clothes and nappies get bigger too. So do the toy and book collections! Because of this, make sure you plan for plenty of storage in your baby’s nursery to fit everything they need now but also in the near future.

Include Comfortable Seating

When designing your baby’s nursery, incorporate a comfortable seat for a parent to use. This can be a nursing chair or just a regular armchair. This will become a nice place for a mum or dad to sit when feeding the baby or for reading a bedtime story to your baby.

Plan for Functionality and Longevity

When planning a room for a child, it’s important to think about how the room will grow with them. You don’t want to have to redecorate or refurnish the space every year so plan ahead. Extra storage, enough space for your child to play, space for a larger bed as your baby moves from a cot to a toddler bed or a single bed, and so on.

Safety Considerations

Safety is another important aspect for any room for children. Baby proof the space, and toddler proof when the time comes too. This includes making sure there are no dangly cords, that windows can’t open fully, that all electrical sockets are covered, no sharp corners or objects are present, adding baby gates where needed, etc. Different stages of babyhood and toddlerhood come with different risks so adjust as your little one grows.

Conclusion – How to Decorate Your Baby’s Nursery

Designing your baby’s own room is a fun and rewarding project. With the above tips, you’ll hopefully feel well-equipped and ready to start decorating your baby’s nursery.

Collaboration.
