4 Ways to Ease Migraine Pain

If you ever have migraines, you know how awful they can be. They’re much more than just a regular headache and symptoms can include nausea, sensitivity to sound and light alongside sharp or pounding pains in the head or in the eyes for some.

I’ve been suffering from migraines for many years now and mine seem to be connected to my cycle and I am more likely to get a migraine when my period is due or I’m ovulating.

However, hormonal changes aren’t the only trigger. Research has shown a strong link between trigeminal nerve migraine and severe headache pain. The trigeminal nerve, which is responsible for facial sensation, can become overactive or inflamed, leading to intense migraine episodes. This nerve plays a crucial role in pain signaling, and when irritated, it can contribute to the debilitating symptoms many migraine sufferers experience.

There are many natural ways to prevent migraine and many drug-free ways to ease migraine pain too. They might not always remove all symptoms but should help reduce the severity of the symptoms which is always helpful.

Treatments that focus on nerve function, such as chiropractic care, have shown potential in helping to regulate nerve activity and reduce inflammation.

  • Make Changes to Your Diet

What we eat and drink affects our health in many ways and diet plays an important role in migraine prevention too as there are many foods and drinks that are known triggers.

There are many foods that make it onto this list of common triggers. A few to avoid include foods high in nitrates and/or MSG, chocolate, cheese, alcohol, processed foods, and pickled foods. It’s very individual what triggers a migraine, so it’s a good idea to keep a diary of what you eat and how you feel. For some people, a bit of caffeine will help a migraine but too much of it can also cause them.

Foods that are good to include in your diet to prevent migraines and reduce migraine pains are foods high in magnesium. Some options high in magnesium are nuts, seeds, oatmeal, eggs, and milk. You can also take a daily magnesium supplement.

Drinking plenty of water to ensure you are well-hydrated is another way to help prevent migraines. Ginger is also known to help reduce migraine symptoms and severity.

Yoga for Migraine Relief
  • Incorporate Yoga into Your Routine

Yoga is a great form of exercise that supports overall health and well-being. When you do yoga, you use breathing techniques and improve your posture too which can help prevent migraines and improve your physical health. Yoga is also thought to reduce anxiety and stress which can help your mental health and reduce tension headaches.

  • Experiment with Essential Oils

There are also a few essential oils that could potentially ease migraine pains. Peppermint oil is thought to be useful in preventing migraines and can also be used to treat migraine symptoms, applied to the skin on your forehead and temples to reduce pain and nausea.

Lavender oil is known to be calming and soothing but can also be used to ease migraine pain by being inhaled or diluted and applied to temples.

Some of my favourite ways to treat my migraines include a neck and shoulder massage, a hot bath with some relaxing products and resting in a calm, dark room. I always struggle to drink water when I have a migraine attack but do try to make sure I drink enough. Next time a migraine strikes, I will try some of the options above too.

Collaboration.
