|AD | Squishysaurus Educational & Interactive Children’s App – Introduction, Review & Giveaway
When it comes to apps that my young children use, my husband and I only choose ones that are educational or creative. Why not combine the fun of playing on an app with learning? Kids love it and it’s a great way to incorporate educational elements in day to day life in a fun way. This month, we’ve been introduced to a new educational and interactive children’s app called Squishysaurus and it’s quite special!
Squishysaurus is more than just an app, you see. The brand has three super cute squishy and lovable dinosaur toys that you play with alongside the app making it interactive and helping children connect with the characters on a completely different level.
Making learning exciting, Squishysaurus dinosaurs combine loveable toys with storytelling, unique characters and an Augmented Reality app.
The Squishysaurus Characters
There are three Squishysaurus characters to choose from or collect if you wish. They are Emma the scientist, Alfie the artist and Madison the athlete. They are all designed to nurture children’s imagination and have different personality traits and ambitions. They are positive role models for children, passionate about their field and hard working.
I appreciate that the girl characters have science and sports interests and the boy one is the creative one, showing kids that you can pursue any interest no matter your gender. It’s lovely to see this in the toy world that’s usually full of gender stereotypes.
You can buy each Squishysaurus character separately or in a bundle pack with all three. The toys are large and squishy and lots of fun for kids. They can be squished and then they go back to their regular shape which is an activity that provides endless fun for young children! Each character comes with a booklet with a story and quiz and QR code card to use to unlock the app features.
My middle daughter is 3.5 years old and absolutely loves playing with these as regular toys and she carries them all with her from room to room in our house. She’s really fond of them! My eldest is nearly 6 years old and she loves squishing the toys too but also loves using the app. More about the app below.
The Squishysaurus App
The Squishysaurus App is completely free to download. The free download comes with a General story that you can read by yourself or with text on the screen as a narrator reads it out loud to you.
You can unlock the other three stories with the QR code that comes with each Squishysaurus toy (one story for each character). This also unlocks the interactive augmented reality character. You can use voice recognition or the buttons to animate the characters and let your child interactive with the toy in a fun way.
This feature shows your own room as the background (here you can see our rainbow picnic mat that we were playing on) which makes it feel like the character is really there in your room. My middle girl especially loved this feature. You can get your dinosaur to say hi to you and do a few different functions.
My eldest loves listening to the narrator reading the stories and reading along herself at the same time. At the end of each story, you can take a quiz which is a great idea. The questions are all about the story just read so it encourages your child to pay attention to the story while reading or listening which is a very important skill to learn and practice.
If you get 9/10 or 10/10, you unlock a reward. We did this after a few tries and the rewards we received were £5 off your next character purchase which is good when you only have one or two of the characters but not really useful when you have them all. Also, I think it’s more a reward for the parents rather than the kids so I’d love to see something else as a choice — maybe the reward could be another story or a little game to play within the app? Something that’s clearly a reward for the child doing a good job paying attention to the story. My daughter was a bit disappointed when there wasn’t really a reward for her, but she still enjoys reading the stories and taking the quiz.
The app is very nicely designed and really easy to navigate for both adults and children. I hope to see more stories added for the characters in the future and some different reward options.
Conclusion
Overall, we’re so pleased with these toys. Both my 3.5-year-old and nearly 6-year-old love playing with the dinosaurs and the app. The app is well-designed and educational, and I love the way that the app is combined with physical toys. The girls love this aspect too and I feel like they’re connecting with the characters in a completely different way to if it was just an app alone.
