Book Review: Animalphabet by Julia Donaldson and Sharon King-Chai
|Book Review: Animalphabet by Julia Donaldson and Sharon King-Chai
Julia Donaldson is the author of many of my daughters’ favourite books and I’m sure you have some of her books too if you have young children. Some of our favourites include The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo’s Child, What the Ladybird Heard, What the Ladybird Heard Next and Sugarlump and the Unicorn.
Now Julia Donaldson is back with a new book that’s quite different from her other books — Animalphabet. This time she’s worked with visionary illustrator Sharon King-Chai to create a stunning book that explores the animal world through peep-through pages and amazing fold-out flaps. The illustrations themselves are absolutely gorgeous — so colourful and pretty!
The text of the book is an interactive guessing game — you get a clue for what’s to come on the following page, like can you guess who has more legs than a butterfly?
Each spread focusses on one animal and lets your child compare the different ones to each other. The book is fun to read and helps teach comparison words, adjectives and animals. It also helps you practice remembering where you are in the alphabet as the next animal always begins with the next letter of the alphabet.

It’s such a lovely book for young children! My nearly 5-year-old absolutely loves it and guesses along while we read it together. The design of the cut-outs and fold-out flaps are beautiful and full of details. They’re made of regular paper so the book is not suitable for toddlers to read on their own as they might rip but my toddler loves reading the book with her sister or with me.
Animalphabet would make a perfect gift for a child this Christmas! It’s such a gorgeous and special book that I’m sure all young kids would love. Order yours from Amazon.co.uk.
