Book Review: The Feelings Basket Books by Debbie K.
The Feelings Basket book series is aimed at children aged 5-8 years and are meant as a way to support parents, teachers and children as they face challenges like starting school, bullies, the arrival of a sibling etc. The books encourage children to explore these life event and the feelings associated with them in an educational but fun way.
All the books feature the character Amy Thorpe and how she deals with different events. We have two of the books: The Magic Basket and The New Arrival – Love Lends a Hand.
The thing that’s so special about Amy is that she has a magic basket. The magic basket is a special place where Amy keeps her feelings until she needs them. When Amy faces a problem or emotions run wild, she reaches into the basket for help. This book introduces us to Amy and her feelings and we learn how the magic really works.
In The New Arrival – Love Lends a Hand, Amy becomes a big sister. Her baby brother finally comes into the world and she thought she would be happy after the long wait and all the preparations. In this book she deals with jealousy but luckily love is there to lend a hand and help Amy out.
The narrative is simple yet engaging and the illustrations are sweet and brings the stories to life. The books are really good for children going through big life events, especially those who struggle to express their feelings. They’re a great conversation starter to help you talk about more difficult things and emotions with your children or children you work with if you’re a teacher. Older children can read the books on their own and in that way they almost become like friends you can talk to.
The books show children that feelings are completely normal and that it can be nice to talk them through with someone close to you. It’s a very important book series that I think can help many children and parents.
