Porridge made with oats is a great breakfast to start the day with but eating just oats topped with a little bit of fruit is not that filling and it’s a bit boring too. A bowl of porridge offers so much potential, and you can do so much with it and make it much yummier, more interesting, and healthier by adding different ingredients.

So, what can you use to give your porridge a health boost and a flavour boost? There are lots of great things that you can mix into the oats or add as a topping.
I’ve recently made a big change to how I make porridge and am enjoying it much more now as it’s more fun to make, tastes amazing and is more filling too. Plain porridge doesn’t fill me up at all – I need the extra additions for fuel!
How I make my porridge now is that I take some oats and put them in a heat-proof glass bowl, add a heaped spoon of Linwood Hemp Milled Whole Seed, top with water, add a lid and leave to stand for a few minutes. Sometimes, I also add a sprinkle of Drink Me Chai if I fancy a different flavour.
After the oats have softened, it’s time for the toppings! If I fancy a colder porridge, I’ll leave it for longer. I love experimenting with toppings and currently love enjoying a wide range all together. After all, it’s great for your gut health to eat a varied selection of foods.
My current favourites include:
- Desiccated coconut
- Dried cranberries or raisins
- Chopped mixed nuts
- Pumpkin seeds or mixed seeds
- Sliced banana
- Maple syrup
The above mix of toppings is absolutely delicious but I do vary it depending on what we have in the house or what new things I’ve picked up from the shop.
