The First Hippo on the Moon by David Walliams Review
David Walliams has written lots of popular children’s books for older children and one picture book before The First Hippo on the Moon called The Slightly Annoying Elephant. Both picture books are beautifully illustrated by Tony Ross who does a great job bringing Walliams’ characters to life.
The First Hippo on the Moon is about two very different hippos who are both trying to make their dreams come true: they both want to be the first hippo on the moon!
Walliams’ story and writing is funny (of course!) and his comedy brilliance works so well in children’s books — this is definitely a book that will make children giggle and laugh!
The illustrations are great, too, and there’s loads to look at on every page. I love the work with the typography: some words are highlighted by being a different size, the text is angled differently on different pages, some comments are written in comic book style speech bubbles and on one page the text is in a spiral! This makes reading it even more fun and makes the text part of the pictures in an interesting way. It also shows which words to stress when reading.
Speaking of words… there are a lot of made up words in this story that sound funny and that kids will love! They will love the whole book with its funny story (including some fart humour!), colourful pictures and exciting surprises. I think children between 3 and 6 years old will appreciate the book the most.
