How to Get Started with Montessori at Home (the Easy Way)
|How to Get Started with Montessori at Home (the Easy Way)
I’ve been interested in Montessori for quite a few years now but pretty much every time I have wanted to learn more online, via YouTube videos or blog posts, it’s felt very lengthy and overly complicated. That’s not what Montessori is about at all but that’s how it felt to me.
Now, a few years later, I have learnt much more about Montessori and have done so by reading a few carefully selected books on the topic and I am ready to share some of the things that I have learnt in a series of shorter blog articles that are easy to read with tips and information that is easy to apply to your own life, family and home.
Steps for How to Get Started with Montessori at Home
Step 1 – Read & Learn. The best way to start is to read a book or two about Montessori and two books that I really enjoyed are Montessori For Every Family and How to Raise an Amazing Child the Montessori Way – both from DK Books.
Montessori For Every Family is a beautiful, well-designed book that covers pretty much every part of family life and the home in short chapters that are quick and easy to read, with different advice for different age groups and personal stories too.
How to Raise an Amazing Child the Montessori Way is a really useful guide with lots of information and ideas to try in your own home with your children to help their development. The book is clearly laid out, easy to read and has lots of colourful photography to illustrate the ideas.
Reading books like these will help you get a good overview of the key principles of Montessori as well as give you the tools to start incorporating the ideas in your own life.
Step 2 – Start Planning & Doing. Once you have read your chosen book or books, you are ready to use the ideas in practice. You can start new things after each chapter you read if you wish but I think it’s a good idea to have an overview first.
Look at some ideas that really resonate with you and that you think will make a positive change to your family life and see how they work for your family. Don’t try to do everything at once as that is sure to make you feel overwhelmed. Make a few changes here and there and add more as you feel like it.
I will be covering a few areas in upcoming articles here on my blog, including the topics below (and more):
- Setting up Your Home for Montessori
- Montessori Potty Training
- Montessori Tips for Managing Screen Time
- Montessori – Helping with Family Chores
