April is Stress Awareness Month so the perfect opportunity to look into your habits and see how you can reduce the stress in your life. In this article, we’ll look at ways to make well-being a priority in your daily life, how you can unwind and relax after a busy day. How you start your day is so important as it will set the tone for the rest of the day. A rushed, stressful morning can easily ruin your mood for the whole day ahead. Equally, a calm morning with helpful routines and a bit of time for yourself, can set you up for the day with a positive mindset. This will help you all through the day in so many ways. It’s wise and well-worth the time to ensure your morning runs smoothly. 

Tips for a calmer morning:

  • Prepare what you can the night before. Choose your clothes and lay them out (teach your kids to do the same!), pack your bag if you are heading out, do a quick tidy up, and decide what you will be eating for breakfast, and so on.
  • Get up earlier. Of course, it’s lovely to get as much sleep as possible but if you snooze your morning away, you will end up rushing. For a calmer morning, get up earlier to ensure you can do everything you need to do and want to do, without any stress. If you have kids, get up before them if you can. Then you can sit down for a little bit on your own and start the day calmly. I love doing this with a cup of coffee in the morning, a book in my hand, and a scented candle lit in the room. In the summer, I sometimes head out for an early walk and then have my first cup of coffee in the garden. Bliss!
  • Have a routine. Do the things that you need to do in the morning in the same order every day. The steps of your routine will flow more easily this way and without you having to make lots of decisions. For me it tends to be: quiet coffee, get the kids up, make breakfast, pack lunches, get dressed and ready, help get kids ready, school run, a quick walk, then home and start the work day.

The Little Things

When looking into how to make well-being a priority, it’s easy to get sucked into the big things such as eating healthily, exercising and sleeping. These are all important things to do for yourself of course but it’s important to not overlook the little things. The small details in our lives can have a huge impact too. I find that the little things are especially important for creating moments of relaxation, calm and indulgence throughout the day. Here are a few of my favourite ways to pamper myself with smaller details:

  • Home fragrances. Enjoying beautiful scents through scented candles, aromatherapy oils, or natural room sprays to create calming environments. Evening Wind Down

Last, but definitely not least, let’s look at ways to wind down at the end of the day to prepare your mind and body for a good night’s sleep. Ensuring that you get enough sleep is so important for our well-being. If you sleep well, you will feel better mentally and physically so do what you can to improve the quality of your sleep and the amount of sleep that you get.

  • Create an evening routine. One of the best things that you can do to improve your sleep is to create a calming evening routine. That could involve anything that you find relaxing such as some stretching or yoga, a walk after dinner, a cup of herbal tea, doing something calming such as knitting or colouring, reading a book, having a relaxing bath, taking time to do your skincare routine, and so on. Create a routine with habits that make you feel relaxed and calm. Doing the same kind of things in the same order each evening will help tell your mind and body that it’s time to unwind for bed. 
  • Go to bed at the same time every day. On the same note as above, going to bed at the same time every day will help you sleep better too. Likewise, waking up at the same time is optimal as well. If you start going to bed at the same time, you might even find that you wake up naturally around the same time each morning too.

I have recently started prioritising my sleep and going to bed at a reasonable time instead of staying up late. To help my sleep, I like to have a cup of herbal tea whilst watching a bit of TV with my husband, then I have a hot bath which is my favourite way to relax.
