How to Save Money During the Summer Holidays
|How to Save Money During the Summer Holidays
The school summer holidays are full of family fun and most kids enjoy having some time off from school too. The summer holidays also come with quite a bit of stress and worry for parents who often have to juggle work and childcare over the holiday weeks. Many parents have to take unpaid leave and take turns with their partner to manage it all.
Plus, then there’s the planning and trying to fit in as many fun activities, trips, and days out as possible to keep the kids entertained during the holidays. This can feel like a huge task and it’s something that requires a lot of work and money, of course. A lot of parents feel the pressure to create exciting summer memories for their children and feel like they have to spend a lot of money to do so. This extra financial stress can take its toll quickly… In this blog post we are looking at how to save money during the summer holidays while still having plenty of fun too!
- Make a Holiday Plan
At the start of the holidays, it’s a good idea to make a plan of some fun things you want to do as a family. Make a list of things that are do-able (in terms of budget, location, and time) and that the whole family will enjoy. Then plan how you can fit these things in over the holidays. If you can, spread the activities out over the summer holidays so that you have something exciting to do once a week or so.
- Schedule in Calm Home Days
Following on from the above, not every day needs to be packed with adventures. The summer holidays are also about enjoying slow days at home. Sleeping in, staying in pyjamas all morning, eating brunch instead of breakfast, reading a full book in one day, watching too much TV, playing games with your family members, enjoying your own home and garden. These types of days are a very important part of the holidays and will allow your children to recharge and relax, not rush around. These kinds of days at home are also cheap and you should be able to get some work done too.
- Be Savvy
Summer days out can quickly become very expensive, especially if you have a large family. Be savvy when planning days out. Buy tickets to places online in advance using discount codes and take reusable water bottles and snacks with you to limit how much food you need to buy when out. If eating in a restaurant, have tap water as your drinks and don’t order more food than you need. Often, young kids can share a meal, for example. Treats bought on days out is another cost that can quickly become big. Make an ice cream out a rare summer treat for once or twice during the holidays. The other ice creams can be enjoyed at a fraction of the price at home instead, saving you lots of money.
- Make Some Extra Money
Spending less is a great way to improve your finances and so is making some extra money. Every little helps, and even a small side hustle can make a big difference to your family’s holiday budget. Maybe you can turn a hobby into a small business on the side, try online surveys to make some spending money or have a go at investing in digital currency using bitql? Whatever works with your schedule and works for your skillset. Cryptocurrencies are unregulated in the UK and any profits may be subject to capital gains tax. As with all investments, there’s an element of risk and the value of your investments can go up or down.
The summer holidays should be a time of fun and relaxation – not a time of financial worry and stress. Take it easy, don’t overschedule your children and let them enjoy the smaller (and free!) pleasures of life too.
