It’s nearly time for National Picnic week, which is an annual event here in the UK, held during the last week of June each year. This year the dates are Saturday the 17th of June to Sunday the 25th of June. Let’s get ready for a summer full of picnics shared with our loved ones!

What is a picnic?

A picnic is simply a meal eaten outdoors, usually as part of an excursion, somewhere scenic like a beautiful park or in the woods, for example. They can also be enjoyed at public events such as open-air cinemas or theatre. You can of course also have a picnic in your own garden if you want to! I find that children love eating outdoors at home or away.

Eating al fresco like this is a great way to enjoy your food when the weather is nice while also socialising with your family and friends.

When picnicking, you would usually sit on a picnic mat placed on the ground (hopefully on soft grass!). Most of the food will be things that you’ve already prepared at home (perhaps a quiche, a pasta salad, or some sandwiches) or pre-prepared/pre-cooked items that can be enjoyed cold (such as sausage rolls, for example) plus lots of snacks, salads, and fruit.

Joe&Seph’s gourmet popcorn are available in larger sharing bags that are ideal for picnics. They come in the classic flavours Sweet & Salty and Toffee which are both scrumptious!

There’s usually a delicious mix of foods, both savoury and sweet, to enjoy and everyone can create their own little platter of things that they like. There might be some hot tea or coffee in flasks and many picnics also include some wine for the grown-ups!

The food can be packed in a wicker picnic basket for a traditional style – these usually come with crockery and cutlery included that can be secured on the underside of the lid. These are beautiful but do not keep food chilled, so I prefer using a cool box or a picnic backpack with a built-in cool bag instead to keep the food fresh and the drinks cold.

The bag comes with a 115 x 135cm green geo pattern fleece picnic blanket with waterproof PEVA backing which is excellent – this can easily be rolled up and secured with the straps on the front of the bag. On each side, there’s a bottle holder – one with a zip and one with an open top to fit wine bottles! These attach with Velcro fasteners so can be removed and used separately too.

The large zipped cooler area at the back is big enough to fit anything that needs to stay chilled and the large pocket at the front has unique compartments to organise all the included dining essentials securely and neatly.

Inside this compartment you will find 4 stainless steel cutlery sets (knives, forks and spoons), 4 dinner plates, 4 plastic wine glasses, 4 cotton napkins, 1 butter knife, 1 small square chopping board, 1 bottle opener and a set of salt & pepper shakers.

It’s a great idea having all your picnic essentials gathered in one place like this. This way, you can be ready for an impromptu picnic super quickly! Just add the food and drinks and you’re ready to go! Here’s for a summer of picnics!
