Sadly many children don’t get much time, if any at all, with their grandparents. Sometimes it’s because they live far away, sometimes it’s because they passed away too soon. It’s still nice for children to know their grandparents’ stories though which Memolio helps bring to life. Memolio makes personalised, AI-illustrated hardcover books about the real life of a real person, such as a grandparent. Let’s have a look at how this works!

Memolio: Their Life Story, as a Beautifully Illustrated Book

Memolio is a personalised book about grandparents. To create one, all you need is about 30 minutes and a photo of the person the book is about. You can use more than one photo if you want to and have them available. Everyone else in the story can be described without the need for photos. Memolio only uses your photos to create your book’s illustrations, and then deletes them after a set period. They are NOT used for training AI models and are NOT sold or shared for advertising. To make the book they are processed by Memolio’s named AI suppliers, and for nothing else.

When ready, you fill out a simple form with some stories and memories of the person the book is about. Then AI writes the story using the memories you provided. It also paints a beautiful watercolour storybook that brings the grandparent to life for their grandchildren. Every story is completely unique and created specifically for you from the answers and memories that you share in the form.

Once this step is done, you can review every page of the book to make sure it’s exactly how you want it. You can do up to 50 free regenerations (outfits, faces, scenes, etc.) which is more than enough. Nothing gets printed until you have approved the book. 

About 7 working days later, your beautiful book arrives in the post! The book is a 24-page personalised hardcover book, in A4 portrait, with 170gsm machine-coated silk interior, and a case-wrap cover. The print quality is great and the book is high-quality.

My Experience Creating a Personalised Book with Memolio

To test out Memolio, I made a book about a fictional grandfather – Pops! – and his life story. I filled in the details, added photos and adjusted these as needed to fit what I had in mind. 

It was quick and easy to fill out the form and to add the stories. I’m so impressed with how the story was written so well with just a few sentences from me to build from. You don’t even have to write the stories down, you can use a microphone to speak instead if that is easier for you. 

The form prompts you for the details needed for the book so you don’t really need to think of much – just choose your favourite memories to include. 

Sit back, and the book will be made for you…

Once the form has been completed and all the drawings of the people have been approved, you leave AI to create the book for you. Then you check each page to make sure everything is how you want it and edit anything that’s not. Perhaps a location is not quite right, or you need to add a person or edit what a person looks like or what age they are in a certain scene. 

A few AI mistakes – they were easy to rectify with the free edits though!

Any edits are easy to do and don’t take long. I do find that the drawings that were created from the photos at the start were the best ones though. Some of the edits went a bit wrong which is common with AI –  a photo frame ended up with legs and I tried to change the hair colour of someone in a photo on display and a hair do appeared all around the frame instead.

These little things are easy to fix though by redrawing or selecting areas to remove from a drawing. This is not a complaint at all, just a downside of AI. 

The big plus side is of course the ability to create a unique personalised book that is made especially for you at an affordable price. 

Conclusion

I am not someone who actively uses AI as I think it’s overused in our world already. But it’s nice when it can be used for things like this, to help someone’s life story be remembered by their young family members through a lovely book.
