Smart Bottoms Cloth Nappies Review – 3.1 AIO, Dream Diaper 2.0… #ClothNappyMonday
A month or so ago, we received a lovely package from Smart Bottoms Europe and Stoffywelt. In the package were some lovely goodies from Smart Bottoms which is an American brand of cloth nappies. They’re made in the USA too and the brand is one of the most popular cloth nappy brands in America with a huge online community. Smart Bottoms is quite new in Europe and the UK but growing in popularity over here too.
Smart Bottoms make a great range of cloth nappies in different styles with different features. The materials used are unbleached organic cotton and very absorbent hemp. There’s an extensive range of gorgeous prints and colours and new ones are released often.
The company makes cloth nappies for newborns and in BTP sizes and also make swim nappies, wet bags in all sizes from mini to large, nursing scarves, beach and snuggle blankets, and bandana bibs.
Let’s have a look at the products that we chose to test:
- Smart Bottoms Dream Diaper 2.0 in Enchanted
- Smart Bottoms 3.1 AIO in Heinrich
- Smart Bottoms Too Smart Cover in Martha’s Vineyard
- Smart Bottoms Oval Wet Bag (L) in Enchanted
- Smart Bottoms Born Smart AIO – Newborn in Enchanted
Smart Bottoms Dream Diaper 2.0
We have the Smart Bottoms Dream Diaper 2.0 (31,00 EUR) in Enchanted which you’ll see if my favourite print. This is a high-quality cloth nappy that’s really easy to use and unlike most cloth nappies it only needs to be pre-washed once to reach its full absorbency. I don’t usually prewash new nappies, but just leave them on for shorter periods when they’re new but it’s great that they’re so absorbent so soon.
This nappy should fit from around 5kg to 16kg and you easily adjust the size with the poppers to make the nappy smaller. The inner of the nappy is made of hemp and organic cotton which are great natural and absorbent materials. The outer is made of waterproof PUL. This nappy also has a pocket opening if you wish to add an extra booster.
I find that the Smart Bottoms Dream Diaper 2.0 is quite a generous size yet slim fitting. My toddler is 2 years old, over 13kgs and on the chunkier side and this nappy fits her very well with a bit of room to grow too as we’re not on the largest popper setting yet (we are on most nappies).
The nappy is not bulky at all which is great, and I find it slim between the legs too which must make it more comfortable than bulkier nappies. It doesn’t leave any marks and seems to fit very well all over.
The Smart Bottoms Dream Diaper 2.0 washes very well and doesn’t take too long to dry. You can take one part out to speed up the drying too. You can wash it up to 60 degrees and tumble dry on low if needed.
The absorbency of the Smart Bottoms Dream Diaper 2.0 is good too – I believe this is our first hemp nappy and it works very well for us.
Smart Bottoms 3.1 AIO
We have the Smart Bottoms 3.1 AIO (29,00 EUR) in the cute and colourful dinosaur print called Heinrich. It’s a great AIO nappy suitable for babies/toddlers between 5 and 16kg. This nappy is simple but clever and has an outer layer of waterproof PUL and an absorbent inner made from 100% organic cotton. The insert is shaped like a long tongue that folds over – you can fold it differently depending on where you need the most absorbency.
There’s no pocket or loose parts, everything is attached so you don’t need to assemble anything or locate the correct inserts after washing which makes it a great choice for busy parents, cloth nappy beginners and nursery.
The Smart Bottoms 3.1 AIO is easy to fit and it fits very well thanks to the four rows of snaps on the front that lets you change the nappy’s size as your baby grows.
Like the Dream Diapers, this one is also very slim fitting and narrower between the legs than other brands we use which is great. It’s also generously sized.
This nappy does need a few pre-washes before it has reached its full absorbency. The recommended amount is six pre-washes. This nappy can be washed at up to 60 degrees and tumble dried on low if needed.
- Smart Bottoms Too Smart Cover
I love using fitted nappies and covers, especially for overnight. We have the Too Smart (22,50 EUR) cover in a gorgeous block colour called Martha’s Vineyard. It’s like a burgundy with a hint of purple – like a lovely glass of red wine.
This cover is a really nice and thick one – it’s great quality and is sure to keep everything in. It fits babies and toddlers from 5 to 16kg and can be used with fitted nappies, inserts of prefolds. The PUL cover has four rows of snaps so that you can adjust the nappies size to your baby.
It’s a very nice nappy cover that’s well-designed and well-made but unfortunately the legs are too tight on my toddler who weighs a bit over 13kg. She’s got quite chunky thighs so that’s why. The rest of the nappy cover fits really well on her but after wearing it overnight, it was clear that it’s too tight around the legs.
I do really love the double gussets around the legs – they are a great feature for ensuring that there are no leaks and it’s something I look for when buying nappy wraps. I will keep this wrap for our next baby. It can be made quite small so should be good from maybe 3 months onwards.
The Too Smart cover can be washed at 60 degrees and can be tumble dried on low but there’s really no need as it dries so quickly on an airer anyway.
- Smart Bottoms Oval Wet Bag (L)
A good wet bag is an essential item when you’re using cloth nappies. I was using a few medium sized ones but now I have one really large one instead which is much more practical as it keeps them all in one place which means there’s less risk of forgetting a bag at the bottom of the laundry basket!
The Smart Bottoms Oval Wet Bag in L (30,00 EUR) is a very generously sized and clever wet bag. It’s got handles so that you can hang it up on a hook if you wish and to make it easy to carry. It can fit 15-20 nappies which is great!
The bag is double-layered and has a high-quality YKK double-zipper running from the centre of the bag, up and then all around to the side which makes it really easy to put nappies in from any angle and even easier to empty the bag in the washing machine.
I love this wet bag so much! It’s the only wet bag you need at home and I’d highly recommend it to anyone using cloth nappies.
You can wash it at up to 60 degrees and tumble dry on low but it dries really quickly so this is not needed at all. I have the wet bag in my favourite Smart Bottoms print – Enchanted.
- Smart Bottoms Born Smart AIO – Newborn
When I spotted the Born Smart Newborn All-In-One Smart Bottoms nappy (17,90 EUR), I knew I needed to see it in real life. We don’t have a newborn at the moment but are hoping to add to our family not too far in the future and, of course, I’m already thinking about a newborn cloth nappy stash! As you can see, I chose the Enchanted print for this one too.
The Smart Bottoms Newborn AIO fits babies between 2.7 and 5.5kg and is specifically designed for babies in their first few weeks of life. This nappy is pretty much a smaller version of the Smart Bottoms 3.1 AIO and it also features an inner made from 100% organic cotton.
The newborn nappy has a cutout around where the umbilical cord would be to keep this delicate area clean and dry. The one row of snaps at the front helps get a better fit on babies with smaller legs.
On the inside of the nappy, you’ll see a snap-in insert and a pocket. You can tuck the insert into the pocket if you wish or lay it on top of the nappy.
You can also use the pocket to add boosters if you need extra absorbency. It’s recommended to use fleece liners for these nappies too to help catch the poo.
This nappy needs some pre-washing too, so remember to do that before your baby is due to get the most use out of the nappy when your baby is here. The manufacturer recommends washing it six times before first use.
Like the other Smart Bottoms nappies, this one can also be washed up to 60 degrees and tumble dried on low if needed.
- Summary
Overall, I’m really pleased with the Smart Bottoms nappies that we have tried and I can’t wait to try the newborn one one day too! All the nappies seem to be of the highest quality and made with great natural materials which I really appreciate. Smart Bottoms really are smart nappies – the designs are very clever and the nappies are really great!
Local Smart Bottoms retailer are Kingdom of Fluff in the UK and Fluffy Bums in Ireland.
