Tegu Magnetic Wooden Building Blocks Review / via Toyella
When choosing toys for my children, there are a few things I look for. I love finding toys that inspire creativity, that have many uses, that are long-lasting (both in quality and in age-suitability), that are educational, safe and environmentally friendly.
Toyella is now closed but you can find Tegu blocks via The Kid Collective. Use my affiliate discount code “AMUMREVIEWS” for 5% off your order.
That might seem like a long list of demands, but there are toys out there that are all these things. A new discovery of mine are Tegu blocks! They are wooden blocks with invisible magnets enabling you to build amazing, gravity defying constructions that would be impossible with regular building blocks. The possibilities are endless!
We have the Tegu 14 Siece Set in the Jungle colours that includes blocks in 5 shapes and 4 colours (brown, green, yellow and beige). You can also choose Natural which are just beige/natural wood coloured or Tints which have some bright colours like pink and blue too. There are lots of different sized sets available and some even include wheels.
The blocks are made from responsibly sourced Honduran hardwood and the coatings are water-based and non-toxic which is naturally very important for children’s toys.
Inside the lid of the recycled box (that can also be used for storage), there are some suggestions for a few fun creations that you can make with the set. There’s a hiking ninja, a star fighter, a swan, a Maltese falcon and my daughter’s favourite — a unicorn!
Of course, these are just a few of the things you can make. You can pretty much make anything you want — whatever you can imagine! It’s so much fun for adults and children trying different combinations and building new things.
These blocks are suitable from 12 months and onwards — to 99 years as the box suggests. Below, my daughter (who turned 3 years old last month) has made a bird!
My daughter fell in love with these building blocks straight away. She’s really into building things but has never had any magnetic blocks before so it’s a completely new way to play for her.
It’s interesting watching her learn about how magnets work and seeing her figuring out what she can achieve with the different pieces. She seems to learn new things every time she plays with her Tegu blocks, exploring how the blocks work and go together.
She calls them her “very beautiful building blocks”. They are really beautiful, I agree. The durable wood is smooth and the colours are lovely. It’s a stylish set of blocks and they look so nice that I even store them out on display in whatever the latest creation is. It usually ends up being the unicorn as that’s what my daughter is obsessed with at the moment. I quite like the unicorn myself! It looks really nice, doesn’t it?
The blocks make a satisfying click clack sound when they come together confirming the magnets are in the right place. Tegu blocks teach polarity but have other educational qualities too like teaching children about mathematics, fractions and proportions. The lengths and widths of the blocks are perfect fractions of their larger counterpart pieces which can help kids learn about halves, thirds and quarters whilst they’re having fun building with Tegu blocks.
I can’t wait to expand our Tegu blocks collection to make even more elaborate creations for play and learning.
The Tegu Story
Tegu blocks are made in Honduras and the name comes from the name of the capital — Tegucigalpa. Helping the nation is a foundational priority of the company. Honduras is the third poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and Tegu are making a positive difference by:
- providing living wage jobs at their factory offering long-term career growth and development rather than just simple task-based jobs
- planting lots of trees and donating to reforestation efforts in Honduras with every set sold
- sending kids to school to help break the cycle of poverty
Tegu Booklet
The Tegu blocks set comes with an educational booklet with information about how the blocks work, the story of the blocks and ideas for things you can build. It’s a beautiful little book and it’s great reading more about this amazing and magical toy.

These look really cool. I love the retro feel and that they can be left out as an ornament while still being a toy x
