When we go shopping for new clothes, there are so many choices to make and one of them is what fibres we choose for our clothes. The fabrics need to be comfortable to wear and many of us look for quality materials that will last a long time too. The soil used to grow cotton plants also becomes exhausted during cultivation which means artificial fertiliser is required to revive it ready for the next round of cotton plants.

Luckily, not all cotton is grown like this and organic cotton is a good choice. The production of organic cotton uses techniques and materials with a low environmental impact and organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides or artificial fertiliser and is spun without the addition of chemicals, making it a much better choice.

Is Bamboo Better than Cotton?

Bamboo is a great alternative to cotton and needs nothing more than sunshine and rainwater to grow. Bamboo grows very quickly and after cutting, the plant continues to grow new shoots as the roots remain in the ground. About 10 times more bamboo can be produced per square metre compared to cotton plants. Bamboo is also carbon neutral – it is a plant that absorbs the same amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as it releases during harvesting. Choosing sustainable bamboo clothing can be a good way to reduce our carbon footprints.

As always, it is best to do your research and choose brands that grow their fabrics without any harmful chemicals and that choose an eco-friendly fabric extract and production method.
