How to Have a Happy and Healthy January 2017 – My Top Tips
January can be a dull month following all the festivities of December. Suddenly all the fun and celebrations are gone, the Christmas decorations are gone and all the yummy treats too. Money is often tight this month, we’re back to the usual work routine and everyday worries.
It can be difficult to keep your spirits up during this dark month but I’m trying my best by doing a few simple things.
- Choose to Be Happy
This is a big thing for me. I believe that happiness is an attitude and if you have a positive outlook on life you will be much happier than if you choose to be grumpy. Of course, we all have days that are tough but I like to choose to say that I have bad moments or parts of days rather than writing the whole day off and then I can still make the rest of the day better.
- Stay Healthy
Being ill is never fun so I like to do what I can to stay healthy. I cook most of our food from scratch, eat vegetarian food and try to include as many vegetables as possible. If I do get a cold, I try to get rid of it quickly by using natural cold remedies like ginger, lemon and honey teas. During the winter, I add Vitamin C and Zinc supplements to my vitamins to boost my immune system. One of the best ways to not get ill is to wash your hands thoroughly and frequently. When I’m out and about, I use a hand sanitiser.
- Eat Healthily, But Don’t Diet
Dieting does not make people happy and diets are not long term solutions to health. The best way to be healthy and keep a weight that is good for you is to eat real food cooked at home. Choose wholesome ingredients and base your meals around vegetables and you’ll be fine. You can eat everything in moderation. Life is too short for diets and good food is a big part of life so enjoy it. If you eat healthy food most of the time, there’s no excuse not to go out for a treat meal every now and then. We love Revolución de Cuba and are planning a visit this month. Cocktails definitely make us happier too!
- Get Some Light
Light and sunshine are so important to your mood! Make sure you get some daylight every day even if it’s just for 10 minutes. Get outside on your lunch break and walk around for a bit or make sure you’re sat near a window. If you can, dress warmly and head out and enjoy the beautiful winter days when they make an appearance. They’re not all grey, wet and cold! Some are beautifully sunny, bright, snowy and crisp and very enjoyable. If winter really isn’t your thing, book a holiday abroad for some warm sunshine.
- Stay Cosy
Winter will be over soon — believe it or not — so make the most of the cosiest time of the year and enjoy the dark nights in. Watch films, snuggle up on the sofa under a blanket and make hot chocolates. Play board games and drink wine, read a good book sat in front of the warm fire place and do all those other things that are perfect for winter.
- Have Fun
Plan fun things to do this month — with friends or family or on your own. If you have things to look forward to, you will feel much more positive about life. I’m currently compiling a list of all the things I look forward to in the near future to remind me that life is quite good. It works!
I wish you a happy and healthy January!
