How to Use Seasoned Salts – A Guide
|How to Use Seasoned Salts – A Quick Guide
Salt is a cooking staple that can be found in the kitchens of most homes. As well as being an essential nutrient, salt is also a flavour enhancer, making it an important addition to many dishes.
Regular sea salt is a fantastic ingredient to use to season your food, but have you tried seasoned salts? Seasoned salts elevate the taste experience with both saltiness and extra flavour that enhances the flavour of a dish even further. In this article, we will explore how to use seasoned salts. Read on to find out more.
What’s in seasoned salt?
Seasoned salt comes in a wide variety of blends for different uses and flavour experiences. It’s usually sea salt mixed with things like onion, garlic, herbs, and/or spices.
The possible flavour mixes are endless and there are so many interesting products available to choose from with different textures, flavours, colours and characters. Some blends contain ingredients such as lavender, sesame seeds, dried mushrooms, or seaweed to further enhance flavour in fascinating ways.
Which flavoured salt should I use for which dishes?
Naturally the above mentioned flavours all have foods and dishes (and even drinks!) that they work especially well with. Let’s look at what kind of seasoned salt to use for different things.
– Vegetables
Seasoned salt and roasted vegetables are a match made in heaven. Roasted carrots and rosemary salt is a wonderful combination for example, and a salt with paprika, herbs, garlic, onion and chilli is the perfect seasoning perfect for sweet potato wedges. For the best roast potatoes, use a seasoned sea salt with garlic, black pepper, onion, rosemary and thyme.
– Meat
Regular sea salt works well for seasoning meat in general but for barbecued meat, you can add an oomph of flavour with a seasoned salt blend containing spices such as chilli, cumin, black pepper, cayenne pepper, paprika, along with coriander, garlic, onion and oregano. There are lots of excellent BBQ style spice and salt mixes to choose from for your next family BBQ feast.
– Eggs
A simple boiled or fried egg, or a cheese omelette, can be transformed with the help of the right seasoned salt. There are many types of flavoured salts that work well with eggs, such as garlic salt, or salt with herbs, tomato, pepper and/or chilli. Japanese furikake seasoning made with salt, seaweed, and sesame seeds works really well on eggs too.
– Cocktails
There are many popular cocktails that have salt as one of the ingredients or as a garnish and flavour addition to the rim of the glass. A classic Bloody Mary is made with celery salt which is an important ingredient to get the desired flavour, for example. There are many cocktails that are served in a glass with a salt rim, such as a margarita. By using seasoned salt, you can make these drinks even more special and flavoursome. For a margarita, try a salt with lime or a spicy kick. For fruity cocktails, try a citrus salt or a tangy hibiscus salt for a tropical flavour and a savoury contrast.
Great all rounder seasoned salts
As well as more specific salts for different things, there are some seasoned salts that make great all-rounders that can be enjoyed with many different meals. Some of these versatile options include Chinese spiced salt (with sweet Sichuan pepper), roasted garlic salt, Virgin Islands spiced salt (with black peppercorn, nutmeg, cloves, rosemary, bay, and thyme), or Wild Herb cooking salt (with pepper, lavender and wild herbs).
