International Day of Natural Cosmetics | 23 November 2022 | AD

Today we are celebrating International Day of Natural Cosmetics and are championing skincare products and cosmetics that are authentically natural, organic, and sustainable.

The event is led by NATRUE with an aim to help prevent greenwashing and promote the benefits of truly natural products, for both people and our planet. This is a global awareness day that will be marked in over 30 countries across the globe to inspire us to #choosetruebeauty.

NATRUE is a non-profit organisation that provides the acclaimed international certification standard for natural and organic skincare and cosmetics. This certification sets the strict criteria for third-party certification to distinguish truly natural products from the large range of products that are nature inspired but not actually natural.

Choosing NATRUE certified natural products ensures your skincare and beauty routine doesn’t harm our planet by protecting our natural resources, our oceans, and the soil.

“Over 1,600 certified raw materials are approved on our database, to help manufacturers to develop products that are more sustainable – such as certified palm oil to protect endangered habitats – or with lower environmental impact with the use of biodegradable surfactants and without the use of microplastics. At their core, all products carrying the NATRUE Label focus maximal use of renewable ingredients such as plant oils, rather than reliance on ingredients derived from fossil fuels”, explained NATRUE Director General, Dr Mark Smith.

NATRUE certified natural cosmetics are made with non-GMO renewable raw materials and do not contain any ingredients made from mineral oils or silicones. They are free from microplastics to protect our oceans and water ways and they are not tested on animals. Any palm oil used must be certified to be sustainable / organic and the biodegradability of ingredients is taken into account too.

NATRUE was created in 2007 and the seal currently appears on 6,500 certified natural and organic cosmetic products, from 280 certified brands in over 30 countries across the world. Here in the UK, these brands include Weleda, Lavera, Dr. Hauschka, Dr Bronner Soaps, Trilogy, Ben&Anna, Fair Squared, and Aeos, to mention just a few.

I have been a fan of Weleda for as long as I can remember and here you can see some of their many NATRUE certified products.

These are from the Weleda Sensitive Bodycare range and are really nourishing, protecting and gentle products designed for sensitive skin. The Sensitive Body Lotion is fast-absorbing and provides long-lasting hydration with a calming and soothing formula made with organic coconut oil and jojoba oil. It’s a great staple for dry skin! The Sensitive Hand Cream from Weleda is one of my favourite products that I like to keep nearby throughout the winter months when my hands tend to get dry from the change in temperatures. It’s a silky and light formula that absorbs quickly to protect and moisturise your hands. It’s so soothing and caring!

Lavera natural cosmetics is another leading natural and organic NATRUE certified skincare brand. Their products are made with 100% natural and organic ingredients and there’s a wide range of items for different skincare needs, for the whole family. Here you can see some products from their Basis Sensitiv range and a few make-up items.

The Basis Sensitiv range is designed for normal and dry skin and includes natural, easy-to-use products to help you look after your skin every day. The product range features caring formulas that provide your skin with intensive, long-lasting hydration. I’m enjoying trying these lovely products: Calming Moisturising Cream, Calming Cleansing Foam and Calming Night Cream.

I don’t often wear make-up, but it’s great to see that Lavera offers lots of high-quality, natural options. Above, you can see their Lash To Impress Mascara and Tinted Lip Balm.

Next up is the brand Dr. Hauschka whose skincare products are 100% certified natural cosmetics. Here, you can see their Revitalising Shower Set which would make a lovely Christmas present for a loved one (or yourself!). This gift set also gives back – for every set sold, Dr. Hauschka donates £1 to Just a Drop which is a charity that focuses on bringing clean, safe water to rural communities across the world.

The set also includes Dr. Hauschka’s award-winning hand cream with blackthorn, anthyllis, beeswax and wheat germ oil for smooth and deeply nourished hands. Last, but not least, the set includes a limited edition lemon soap that cleanses and refreshes skin.
