Playray Kids Natural Crafts Box Review – A Zero Waste Crafts Box
It can be challenging to keep coming up with fun and creative activities for your children. For busy times or when you’re just not feeling very creative yourself, a little help can be very useful. The Playray box is a zero waste natural crafts box for kids, inspired by nature. It’s filled with carefully selected natural play materials and activities for children to enjoy. It’s a crafts box that encourages children to love nature and learn from it from an early age and the materials are all natural and safe to play with.
The box is suitable for children aged 3 and above and contains a bunch of fun things to do and learn from! My two older girls are 5 years old and nearly 3 years old and they both love the selection of things in the Playray box.
What’s in the box?
There are four activities in the box:
- Storytelling playmat
- ‘Grow grass’ kit
- Scavenger hunt ‘Discover nature’
- ‘A tale of the Moon and the Little Stars’ story book
This is a lovely play set that can be enjoyed over and over. It consists of a wool forest meadow playmat complete with a stream (made from the best quality wool using wet felting technique), three wooden animals, one wooden bridge, one wooden tree, one wooden pompon fire, one crocheted cotton acorn, one crocheted cotton carrot, one needle felted baby chick, one nutshell boat, two pinecones, three wooden log slices and approximately ten white sea pebbles.
My girls love setting up a forest meadow fairy tale scene with these materials. The items are lovely and it’s a great way to play to let children develop their imagination, speech and fine motor skills as well as connecting with nature through these materials.
‘Grow grass’ kit
My eldest daughter has recently got into growing things at home, so this is a great activity for us. The kit includes everything you need to get started growing your own grass at home. The set includes a biodegradable peat pot, a cork pot sauces, a sachet of grass seeds (approximately 40 seeds), an adorable child sizes watering can, a handful of organic soil and a parchment paper bed.
Learning to grow things at home is lots of fun for children and it also teaches them important skills and where things come from! Our grass is growing very well in a sunny window in the kitchen.
Scavenger hunt ‘Discover nature’
These are two laminated season-based lists of nature elements for spring and summer. They can be used for scavenger hunts in your garden or on walks and will keep the kids entertained as they learn to search and find specific things. They can be ticked off with a whiteboard pen, then you can just wipe the lists clean and use them again and again.
‘A tale of the Moon and the Little Stars’ story book
The last activity is a story book to read with parents or on your own. This book was especially created for the Playray box so is not available anywhere else.
I love this activity box! The materials used are so lovely and it’s so nice to see a box focused on nature and one that doesn’t create lots of plastic waste (like so many other kids’ products!). When you purchase a Playray box, a portion of the sale also goes to charity. I also love that the activities are ones that last — you can use the playmat over and over indefinitely, same with the scavenger hunt and the book and you’ll be able to watch your grass grow over time and then keep your grass growing. There’s nothing about this box that’s single use and that the kids will just do once and then forget about. The zero waste aspect is brilliant too — Playray even use wool instead of bubble wrap to keep the items protected in transit. This wool can then be used for crafting or playing.

By the way, can you spot the ladybird in the first photo?
