Products for an Eco Friendly Kitchen
|Products for an Eco Friendly Kitchen
A big part of being eco friendly is to limit your consumption and use what you have but there are definitely some consumable things that need to be bought frequently and some items that are a bit more of an investment. In this article, we’ll look at some eco friendly products for the kitchen and how you can choose these wisely.
- Dish Washing
For eco friendly dish washing by hand, you need to ditch the plastic sponges, plastic dish-brushes and the single-use plastic bottles of washing up liquid. There are many plastic-free options available that you can use as tools to wash your dishes – wooden dish-brushes, reusable sponges and scourers or washable dish cloths are just a few. You can find lots of eco friendly alternatives to plastic dish sponges and brushes here. For the dish washing soap, you can opt for a refillable liquid option or a dish block like the one in the picture above.
- Hand Washing
A bar soap is a great option in the bathroom but, in the kitchen, I prefer to use a liquid hand soap. We are currently using ChooseWell’s range of ethical hand wash that are made with 95% natural ingredients and are all dermatologically approved, cruelty-free and vegan-friendly. They’re made in the UK and available in four amazing fragrances – Almond & Vanilla, Botanical Orange, Cedarwood & Sage and Rose Geranium. They are SLS and paraben-free, and are enriched with certified organic aloe vera and the scents are long-lasting and so wonderful! Even the kids can’t stop saying how nice they smell! The hand washes from ChooseWell are gentle on our hands and leave them feel clean and soft.
ChooseWell’s products are packaged in either 100% recycled and recyclable plastic bottles or glass bottles. Customers can choose to use ChooseWell’s reuse and refill subscription service and all four fragrances are available in 1-litre refill packs that can be delivered directly to their homes.
ChooseWell also supports the work of life-changing charities that the customers choose at the time of purchase on the ChooseWell website.
Projects either help to provide clean safe drinking water for school children in developing countries, support tree-planting initiatives that help counteract the global effects of climate change, or tackle homelessness in the UK.
Founder of ChooseWell, Stewart Roussel, comments: “We believe in the power of consumers to make positive changes in the world. When you choose our products, you’re not just buying hand wash, you’re making a conscious choice to do some good and help address some of the bigger social and environmental issues in the world today.”
- Cleaning
Switching to eco friendly cleaning products is so easy. There are lots of great brands out there and I especially love using Iron & Velvet and Raindrop which both make zero waste options with small pods that dissolve in water. I use reusable glass spray bottles with mine and have a range of different products for different jobs around the house. I use reusable cleaning cloths from Little Gubbins when cleaning and all this works so well.
- Kitchen Utensils & Equipment
The above were mainly consumables but a kitchen also requires quite a lot of equipment. When you need something new, the eco friendly option is to buy high quality items that will last a long time and not end up in landfill soon or to choose items that are recycled, recyclable, biodegradable or compostable.
The Viners Organic collection includes a variety of affordable and eco friendly kitchen products – from knife blocks, knife sets, utensils and cutlery. The knives have blades made from 80% recycled stainless steel and the handles are crafted using 35% wheat fibre which is a by-product from the farming industry which has historically been burnt. The colour scheme of natural beige and green colours looks beautiful too and would look great in any kitchen.
Like all products from this iconic and loved British brand, this range has been made to the highest standards to ensure durability, strength, and comfortable use. The knives need to be hand washed but all the utensils are dish washer safe.
- Waste Management
An essential part of running an eco friendly home and kitchen is to ensure that you’re not creating too much waste by choosing unpackaged options as much as possible and recycling things that can be recycled. Having a compost bin in your kitchen is also a great way to reduce the waste that goes into the bin and instead make the most of the food scraps to use in your garden for example.
This post features gifted products from ChooseWell and Viners. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
