Three Quirky New Dawid Ryski Children’s Books from Gestalten
Gestalten has quickly become one of my favourite book publishers! Books from Gestalten are simply very different and quirky and we really enjoy them.
We have three new children’s books from Gestalten and they all include work by Dawid Ryski, a talented illustrator for books, newspapers and magazines and a graphic designer of concert posters and album covers. He’s also a drummer!

What Do Grown-Ups Do All Day? (€14.90)
This book was released in autumn last year and it’s a book about different jobs that adults can do. Children often think about what they might do when they grown up and this book inspires children to aspire to think outside the box and consider lots of different careers. The book doesn’t just feature the standard job ideas that children might have but includes careers like designer, bistro chef, punk rock drummer, journalist, male nurse and female pilot. It shows lots of fun options and illustrates that anything is possible for both boys and girls.

“What Do Grown-Ups Do All Day? provides children with creative fuel for professional daydreams and various career paths.”

The illustrations are stunning and in Ryski’s iconic vintage style — each page could easily be a framed print for your walls! Each page features a career and a short text about a relative that does that job and a little bit about them. I really like this personal touch to the text!

Alphabetics – An Aesthetically Awesome Alliterated Alphabet Anthology (€14.90)
This book was released in 2014 and was written by Patrick and Traci Concepción and illustrated by Dawid Ryski. This is an ABC book like you’ve never seen before! You couldn’t really guess what would be the word for each letter and it’s not just a word but a full paragraph focusing on each letter, like Colossal Cornelius captures his companions with his camera and Daisy the diver dares a death-defying dip with dinosaurs.

Each of the alphabet’s letters has their own awesome alliteration and gorgeous illustration and this book is sure to be enjoyed by children and the adult reading the book to the kids too. The texts are fun and challenging — some are a bit of a tongue twister! — and the addition of complicated words is a great idea as it introduces children to new words and helps them expand their vocabulary. There’s even a glossary so that you can look up any words you might not know.

It’s a brilliant book that is so much fun to read and again, the illustrations are beautiful!

“An octopus swims next to a jar of ink with a quill pen.
A friendly, brown grizzly bear stares from across the page at a beehive dripping with honey.
A wise owl perches next to his prized spectacles.”

You’ll find 23 animals in this book with fun and stylish illustrations in Dawid Ryski’s quirky style. It’s a great book and the large format makes it extra fun and also very suitable for use in nurseries and schools for reading to a larger group of children.
