Unique Interior Design Details for A Home with Personality
A home can say a lot about the people who live there. These days many homes end up looking very similar though with a few big brands dominating the mainstream interior design market. I buy things from some of these shops too, but I try to incorporate some more interesting and unique pieces too so that our home doesn’t look like a catalogue or show home.
So how can you make your home more unique and special? Here are my top tips:
- Find Independent Retailers
When changing furniture in your home, avoid going straight for the chains and look online to find independent retailers that match your style and ethos. Greenway Furniture is a great example of this that suits my taste perfectly. They specialise in reclaimed wood furniture which helps reduce waste, is eco-friendly, durable and unique too.
- It’s All in The Details
The details can really make a home and choosing original and handmade items will ensure that your home is different and showing your true self. One of my favourite decorative items in our home is a metal bowl that a friend of mine has made for us and that is definitely an item that no one else has. I also love using books that I’m currently reading and enjoying as part of the décor and arranging everyday items that we use and love in an attractive way.
- Add Textures
Textiles like cushions, throws, curtains and rugs are a great way to add depth and personality to a room too. Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns and colours to suit your own personal taste and change things up whenever you fancy a change. Wallpapers are another easy way to add texture and colour to a room to make it look more interesting. Stay away from super trendy patterns and designs and go for more unique options. If you like a retro look like I do, check out Wallpaper from the 70s for some groovy options.
- Make Your Own Art
If you’re the creative type yourself, why not make your own art for your home? I’m trained as a graphic designer and have made quite a few prints that I’ve printed on canvas to use around our home and also love printing some of our favourite photos on canvas for the same purpose. This way, I know that our artwork is original and special to our family. If you’re not artsy yourself, there are plenty of artists available online who specialise in personalised artwork or maybe you have a friend or family member who can help make something special for you?
- Avoid Trends
This is probably the most important step when it comes to creating a home with personality. Trends come and go and loads of people follow them which makes them quite boring. Only choose items and unique interior design details for your home because you love them, not because they’re popular at the moment. Sometimes, this might mean buying a trendy item but that doesn’t mean your home has to follow the whole look that’s in right now. Try to buy items that will last — items that are good quality and that you know you’ll love for a long time.
I hope these tips have been useful if you’re looking to create a home environment that’s a bit more you!
