When you’re trying to reduce your household waste, your laundry routine is an area that might need attention. Did you know that many cardboard washing powder boxes aren’t actually recyclable? That surprised me when I found out as I thought I was doing the right thing, choosing something packaged in cardboard. The reason that they are not widely recycled is that they have a laminated plastic layer.

I still need to use non-bio powder for our cloth nappies but for our other washing, I now use Clothes Doctor plastic-free laundry detergent which is a great high-quality and environmentally friendly option.

Clothes Doctor makes plastic-free, vegan clothing care products scented with natural fragrances. They also offer reparation, alteration, and restoration services. Their goal is to help people extend the life of their clothing by correctly cleaning them with the right products that will protect the clothing and by repairing garments that are broken and altering anything that doesn’t quite fit. Just like our parents and grandparents used to do. These skills have been missed by many due to the rise of fast fashion. By extending your clothes’ lives, you reduce their carbon, water, and landfill footprint so it’s a great way to be more eco-friendly.

The highly concentrated liquid laundry detergents from Clothes Doctor come packaged in aluminium which is the most sustainable liquid container. It’s infinitely recyclable, lightweight, and perfect for containing these products! Because the products are so concentrated, you only need a tiny amount for each wash. This also reduces the carbon footprint as you don’t need to transport bigger bottles than necessary and much less water is used too.

So, let’s look at the different Clothes Doctor plastic-free laundry detergent products that we’ve tried so far:

Most of our loads of washing have toddler or kids’ clothes in them and since my children have sensitive skin, it’s important to me to use a gentle detergent. My husband has also got very sensitive skin, so he needs a detergent that’s gentle too. This detergent is a lovely all-purpose non-bio formula suitable for little ones and the rest of the family too.

It’s a fully biodegradable detergent that is free from irritants and perfect for sensitive skin. It’s still great at tackling stains though which is also important for me as my kids love playing outside and usually come back in from the garden covered in mud. The fragrance is mild and pleasant too.

Knitwear made from cashmere or wool needs special laundry care to extend the lives of these delicate materials. This detergent cleans, renews and softens delicate knitwear and has a scent of Himalayan cedarwood and orange oil which provides natural moth protection.

Clothes Doctor also makes a Knitwear Mist in a cedarwood and vanilla fragrance that you can spray directly onto dry clothes to refresh them and keep moths away from your favourite knits.

Silk is a luxurious but very delicate fabric that requires special care when washing. We don’t have many silk items in our family, just a pillowcase, but this beautifully scented detergent is also great for other delicate items. Anything that says hand wash or dry clean only or that you’re worried about putting in the washing machine. You can use this to hand wash those items. The scent is bergamot and sandalwood – a great combination!

Over the past few months, I have made an effort to be more active and am walking more. Therefore, I wear activewear leggings several days a week. I’m doing my best to keep my new sports leggings in good condition by washing them in a protective manner.

When washing activewear, there are a few things to consider and using a detergent that has been specially formulated for synthetic sportswear is one of them. Activewear clothes are hardworking garments that can get quite dirty if you are doing sweaty activities or hiking in muddy conditions, so they need good cleaning powers which this Clothes Doctor detergent provides, along with a fresh, invigorating and deodorising scent from lime, peppermint, eucalyptus and lemongrass essential oils.

Last but not least, these cute little travel wash bottles with mineral-based non-bio powder detergent. It’s an all-rounder detergent that can be used for hand washing clothes or for washing them in the washing machine. Such handy, small and leak-proof bottles to take with you when travelling. Great scent too and I love that it works for both washing by hand and machine washing.
