Daddy Day Care by Jonathan Tindale – A Book for New Dads & Curious Mums
I love reading books about parenting (mainly the real stories from real parents, not the how to make your baby sleep kind of books) and my most recent one is Daddy Day Care: a Book for New Dads and Curious Mums which is a funny and honest book that shows what it can be like for a dad on parental leave with his baby.
The book covers everything that new parents go through and some things that only dads experience — being the only male at playgroup for example! The book has also got stick figure illustrations throughout for a bit of extra fun.
The chapters are short and easy to read which is perfect when you have a baby because you don’t get much time to read when you’re on parental leave — or to learn how to play the guitar as the author discovered. I especially loved the chapter that shows every bit of a full day with a baby!
I really like the style of this book — it’s an honest account of what life with a baby is like and shows the hard bits but with humour too. I’d recommend it to new dads for fun stories and situations to read about that they’ll recognize themselves in or dads-to-be who wonder what life with a baby or even life on paternity leave might be like. It’s nice that more dads take parental leave here in the UK now too. I’m from Sweden and back home, most dads share the parental leave 50-50 with the mothers. We might get there one day here in the UK too!
The book is also fun for mums to read — I bet most mums are curious about what dads think about things too and how they’d experience parental leave.
