Korko Building Blocks Made from Sustainable Cork

Building blocks are a classic toy that all children should grow up enjoying. They’re usually made from wood but the ones you can see in this article are made from cork which is a sustainable material that has many positive qualities.
Korko make their toys using cork from a Portuguese oak forest. This particular forest captures up to 4.6 million tonnes of CO2 every year which is amazing! To harvest the cork, the trees are not chopped down either – only the tree bark is removed and this rapidly renewable raw material is ready to be harvested again after about 9 years. The regular removal of the bark also helps absorb more CO2 from our atmosphere. This material and process ensure that Korko toys are climate-neutral. They’re made in Europe too.
Cork is a material that has many great properties. It’s lightweight which makes the blocks very safe if chucked by young children or if a tall tower topples over. The rounded corners of Korko blocks ensure no fingers get trapped and because cork is so light, they’re very peaceful and quiet to play with. Cork also has a non-slip surface, making the blocks easy for little ones to grip, and is naturally antibacterial too. It also has an anti-static effect which means it attracts less dust, making it an ideal material for children with allergies.
Korko’s vision is to offer sustainable, high-quality toys at an affordable price. Education is also a priority and the toys that Korko offers are great for both having fun and developing skills. Playing and building with blocks also encourages creativity.
In this article, you can see the Tall Architects set which is the medium sized set of the ones currently offered. It consists of 40 pieces, in 8 different shapes, in a beautiful range of muted colours. My 3-year-old loves building with her new Korko blocks and comes up with fun designs, both tall builds and patterns and shapes flat on the floor.
