As you probably know by now, we are very passionate about books in this household! My daughters and I love reading and exploring new books. In this post, I’ll share a few of our recent arrivals with a selection of new children’s books from DK Books.
In this new children’s book by Taiye Selasi (author of Ghana Must Go), we follow along the retelling of a West African story about a trickster spider called Anansi. It’s Taiye’s first children’s book.
We meet a boy called Kweku who has grown up hearing stories about this mischievous spider and his dad has even nicknamed him Anansi because he is cheeky too. One day, Kweku meets Anansi and Kweku discovers a magical pot that can be filled with whatever they want. Kweku starts by filling it with his favourite stew but ends up getting belly ache…
The story teaches children about the dangers of greed and the importance of being kind and sharing. The book has colourful illustrations throughout and is a fun book to read with your children. I love that it’s also teaching children about a different culture with this new version of a classic tale.
You might recognise the characters fisherman Finn and his dog Skip from the wonderful book Fish that was released in 2020. In the new book Forest, we join them on their second adventure and this time they’re in the rainforest.
Just like Fish, this is a book that teaches children about environmental concerns and this one is about deforestation and what we can do to help and protect our environment. The book is full of colourful illustrations and the storyline is light-hearted but also gets the seriousness of the topic across.
This lovely book was written by a singer-songwriter and the rhyming words are so sweet and meaningful. It’s a really special book to read to your children that teaches them to look within themselves and see the beauty that is there and how unique they are.
Ideal to read at bedtime as the story is calm and helps build children’s self-confidence. Plus, the beautiful illustrations are serene and peaceful too.
The story is told from the parent’s point of view, reading to their child, looking to things in nature to compare with qualities that the child will have within – being brave, being strong, being kind and so on. It’s very beautiful!
These books were kindly sent to us for review. As always, all my reviews are 100% honest and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
