Quick Changes You Can Make to Improve Your Health
There’s no time like the present! Make the changes below to improve your health now. I’ll try too!
- Drink More Water
This is so simple and important but most of us don’t drink enough water. I mainly drink coffee and tea during the day and only have water in the evenings and I really need to get better at having a few glasses of water throughout the day too.
- Go Whole Grain
This is also quite easy! Swap all your white grain products — cereal, bread, rice, pasta, flour — for the whole grain alternative. They are much better for you and usually taste better too. I think whole grain bread, pasta and bread have a really nice flavour! It’s such an easy change to do as you don’t really need to change your meals at all.
- Booze Less
Drinking alcohol is generally not great for your health other than the occasional glass of red wine or two so if you’re drinking a lot, try to limit it to a couple of evenings a week and try to stick within the recommended unit amount for your gender.
- 10-a-Day
The recommendation now is that 5-a-day of fruit and veg servings is the minimum and that we should aim for 10-a-day instead. Try to remember this when planning your meals and pack as many fruits and vegetables in as possible. I love making vegetarian chilli with lots of vegetables (onions, sweet corn, tomato, peppers in all colours) and lots of different beans. It’s a great meal for increasing your vegetable intake — especially if you eat it with oven baked sweet potatoes.
- Sleep More
Go to bed an hour earlier and don’t use your phone or tablet in bed. Read a book for ten minutes or so to relax and try to sleep. Most of us could do with more sleep — especially us parents!
- Move More
Make sure you get a little bit of exercise each day. It doesn’t have to be proper exercise just physical activity like a walk or playing football with the kids in the garden. It’s good for your physical health and your mental health too.
