Simple, Natural Ways to Boost Your Mood When You’re Feeling Low
Whether it’s long-term depression, the occasional bout of feeling low or simply dealing with the stresses and strains that everyday life throws at us, we could all do with a lift every now and again. In fact, with an estimated one in five people experiencing depression at some point in their lives, taking care of our mental well-being is an essential part of maintaining good health. Fortunately, there are some tried-and-tested mood-boosters that can easily be incorporated into everyday life, including:
- Natural light
Natural sunlight is thought to boost the brain’s production of serotonin, a chemical that is widely associated with keeping our moods in check. Whilst excessive exposure to the sun’s rays can be harmful to the skin, taking between five and fifteen minutes a few times per week to soak up some natural light may literally brighten your mood. Try combining this with a daily walk for some added health benefits.
- Quality sleep
It’s no secret that a lack of sleep leaves many of us feeling irritable, so getting plenty of rest is crucial for maintaining sound mental health. It’s important to focus on both quality and quantity; a temperature-controlling, memory foam mattress like Eve will support your joints and keep you cool, making it easier to get the recommended seven to nine hours per night.
- Exercise
The benefits of regular exercise are seemingly endless, and these aren’t just limited to physical health. Incorporating exercise into your everyday lifestyle will keep you feeling energized and help to maintain a positive outlook on life.

Studies have shown that the simple act of stroking a dog or cat can do wonders for the human mood. According to a University of Missouri-Colombia study, petting a dog for fifteen minutes reduces stress whilst triggering the release of serotonin, prolactin and oxytocin, which are all known for providing a mental lift. If you don’t have a pet at home, volunteer to spend some time with those of friends and family in order to get your dose of animal happiness.

It might seem obvious that spending time with friends and loved ones makes you feel good, but it’s important not to underestimate the effect that others can have on your mood. Steering clear of negative people and surrounding yourself with happy, positive influences will help you to remain upbeat, so choose your social circles with this in mind.
