Your Child Can’t Eat Spicy Food? Here are 5 Other Dishes to Try in Phuket

Thailand is a beautiful culture rich with food and traditions. It’s a great place to take kids on holiday no matter what their diet is. True, Thailand has a reputation for having very spicy food however there are literally thousands of dishes that are not spicy or can be made not spicy for the western palate. All in all, with kids you can’t go wrong with a good fried rice.

When the family is galavanting around Phuket and southern Thailand, tasting your way through the countryside and the cities alike, eventually you’ll need a place to rest. Making this experience with the kids something more than just a trip will be a time they remember for the rest of their life.

Why not stay in a home away from home, somewhere away from the crowds of tourists sharing the pool, checking in and out and talking loudly through the thin walls. Phuket villas are luxury private villas for the whole family to unwind, relax and eat some amazing food. A private pool with a gorgeous view, top of the line kitchen, sumptuously decorated bedrooms and even a movie room are all at your disposal.

Let’s look at some dishes to try in Phuket that children who don’t like spicy food might like too.

  1. Khao Pad (Fried Rice)

A simple dish, khao pad is a main go to dish of Thai cuisine. Many variations and styles lend to its versatility and deliciousness and of course you can have it with almost whatever you like, chicken, vegetables, or seafood. This steadfast standard usually comes without chilies. It’s a great introduction for young ones or first time Thai food eaters.

  1. Pad Thai (Thai Style Fried Noodles)

When one thinks of Thailand, Pad Thai is at the front of that thought. It is the quintessential Thai dish. Some versions come with slices of mild chili peppers on the side of the plate so you can play it by ear about how spicy you want to get. Be sure to avoid hotel restaurants’ Pad Thai as all the flavours and things that make this dish Thai are usually toned down for the tourists. Tasty does not mean spicy, and conversely bland does not mean tasty. This iconic noodle dish contains crushed peanuts and seafood, for those with allergies, all wrapped up in a slightly sweet and tangy sauce.

  1. Gai Tod Khao Neaow (Fried Chicken With Sticky Rice)

This is the simplest but probably the best go to dish of them all. A no frills comfort food that is pure heaven while sitting on the beach watching the waves. Food stalls almost everywhere serve this mouthwatering treat. Often the entire chicken is fried and then chopped so it’s certainly not boneless and a bit of work to eat but oh so worth it.

  1. Khao Neaow Mamuang (Sticky Rice With Mango)

Mango and sticky rice is hugely popular in Thailand and is another iconic dish that comes to mind when one thinks of Thailand.

Thai mangoes are known to be the sweetest and most juicy. But the sugar rush does not stop there. Sweet and thick coconut milk is drizzled on top and blends the starch of the rice perfectly with the tang of the sweet mango. You can find this one just about everywhere in Phuket, from high-end restaurants to street markets. Be sure to try different places, everyone claims to be the best.

  1. Kai Jeow (Thai Style Omelette)

A Thai omelette is not something you will recognise when thinking of a light and fluffy French omelette. But it is in that direction. For instead of milk, fish sauce and spring onions are added to the salty creation. Normally accompanied by fresh steamed rice and chili sauce this dish will be sure to delight your little ones.

  1. Massaman Curry (Gang Massaman)

It’s probably the closest thing to familiar food a first timer to Thailand will get. This delightful, comforting and smooth soup has many spices like cinnamon, star anise, tamarind and mild curry. Big chunks of slow roasted potatoes and beef will melt any food worries away. It’s one of the great dishes to try in Phuket to help your kids ease into traditional local dishes.
