Modern & Practical Tiles for Contemporary Family Bathrooms
I wont lie, our whole bathroom renovation process was a huge job, I didn’t realise how much there was to actually consider! From shelving units to light fittings, but the one thing I did underestimate was choosing which tiles we were going to have – I was like a kid at Christmas! With that in mind I wanted to share my thought process behind the choices we made and a few of my other favourites that were just pipped to the post.
What we went with
If you’ve seen our new bathroom you will more than likely have noticed the tiles, we went for lovely bright wide ceramic tiles with dark grey grouting. Size wise we tried not to go too big, instead we met in the middle. I’ve often read that you should not have tiles on your wall that are bigger than those on your floor.
One of my favourite things about our new tiles is the grouting, we decided to mix it up and go with grey, it really compliments the tiles and I think emphasises the industrial look that seems to be so popular nowadays. I also think that the darker grouting helps to make the tiles pop – they really stand out and seem to flow so naturally around the room. I really like the look and think I would always go for a dark grout for white tiles now.
What are the benefits of ceramic tiles?
As I mentioned above, we decided to go down the ceramic route when it came to our bathroom tiles. Now I wont lie, before all of this I didn’t really know the difference between materials that tiles are made out of, however it seems that there are quite a few advantages to having ceramic tiles, so here they are:
- Easy to maintain – Granted, nothing is maintenance free, especially when you have a family to look after, but ceramic tiles are up there with the easiest to maintain! These tiles just require a simple clean as often as you see fit, nothing fancy just a warm cloth and some soapy water – easy!
- Durability – Probably one the most important factors to consider when choosing anything for a family home; how long will it last? Well, ceramic tiles are renowned for being one of the strongest and most durable types of tiles on the market which is what drew us to them so much in the first place.
- Moisture resistant – Obviously hugely important considering that these tiles are for the room which has the most moisture. Due to how they’re manufactured the body of the tile permits very little or no accumulation of moisture at all.
The other options
Don’t get me wrong, I love our final choice, but there were so many bathroom wall tiles in the running it really was tough to come to a final decision. So which tiles were didn’t quite make the cut?
- Classic smaller subway/metro tiles – I love this look, it feels so retro and yet modern at the same time. Unfortunately for us they were a little out of our price range but they’re still on my wishlist if I get that lottery win or for a smaller area somewhere.
- Border – We found a trend with our love of subway-esque tiles. After looking through a couple of design blogs and various catalogues I took quite the shine to tile borders, specifically red ones. I really admired this look but in the end it just didn’t suit our bathroom and we decided to keep it as simple as we could, but we wont rule it out as a possibility in another room!
And there you have it, that is how we reached our decision, I’m so happy with our new bathroom and really glad with the choices that we made. So how about you? Did you have the same battles as me when it came to renovating? Let me know your thoughts!
